Another question from a guy that is new in DSRL.

I was taking a look in some site lenses (Sigma) to get a complementary lense to the 18-70mm dor the Nikon D70.

So I came up with prime lenses (wich is, if I understood well fixed focal lenses).

Do you have some? What do you use it for?

Thank's from a humble aprentice.

Yes primes are fixed focal. I have two

Canon 50/1.8
Canon 85/1.8

The nice thing about primes is they're usually very high quality compared to zoom lenses.

I used my 50 for a model shoot recently, that's about the most consistent use it's had, in all honesty. (I mostly shoot sports though, so I wasn't expecting to use it heavily.) I use it as a general walk-around lens sometimes, although 80mm (50 * 1.6 crop factor of the 300D) is a little too telephoto sometimes.

My 85 I use for indoor sports, which it's very good at because of the nice wide aperture. Between the 50 and 85 I'm basically set for indoor sports in low-light conditions.

Not sure if that's of interest, but that's what I use mine for. :-)

I'm thinking of getting an 85mm 1.8 for portraits... and prolly a 50mm 1.8 just cause it's so much lens for the price. Also considering a 135mm with soft focus.

The 85 is fairly telephoto for anything other than headshots, kyebosh.. Unless you're standing quite a distance away.

yes I realize that, but I really like doing headshots, so that's one reason for getting it.

Basicaly, if I understood correctly, these are less expensive than zoom lenses and the qualaty is higher. And you use them basicaly for portraits and not much more...

The down side to primes are basically the added weight of several lenses and the time it takes to change them, thus potentially missed shots. Obviously your subject matter and style of shooting significantly impacts these kinds of decisions.

Multiple bodies can reduce lense change time however then there is even more weight. Choices. Fast zooms/telezooms are typically expensive, but save weight and time. Kind of like a carbon fiber tripod vs a 10 pounder.

All of my shots from this shoot were done with the 85mm 1.8. A fantastic lens!

I just gotten my Nikkor 50mm F1.8 and my Sigma 105mm F2.4 Macro in the last couple of weeks. Still getting used to them but MAN they are great...so sharp...and the DOF control is awesome...they put my 17-70 to shame. My BACKLIGHTING entry was taken with my 50mm...my Stopped Motion pic was taken with my Sigma 105mm, and my entry for Touch was taken with my 50mm.....so you can check them out later if you like.

Having a medium long lense for portraits is nice, due to the fact that it eliminates distortion ie 'the dog nose effect' and also gives the model more room so he/she doesn't feel crowded by the photographer.
