Really, it's pretty lame for a hoster not to have redundant utilities (power, connectivity). If this were a for-profit site, or one people depend on, I'd suggest moving to a better provider. |
From what I heard, the financial district in New York lost power -- then there was redunant utility power that failed -- a diesel powered generator that failed -- a UPS that lasted a pretty short period of time since it's only purpose was to maintain power in case of short outages.
A lot of sites were down, including the BBC (www.bbc.com / //www.bbc.co.uk) for most of North America.
We DID make it through September 11th 2001 without a hiccup -- and I believe we were 5 blocks away at the time. "We" being our web server. ;)

No level of redundancy is foolproof. I work in a network operations center for a $11 billion corporation, and I have seen redundant systems have simultaneous or overlapping failures. Backup systems, even rigorously tested ones, will fail from time to time, sometimes at a critical moment.
It's just the nature of the business.

EDIT: I should also mention that the site did stay up during the blackout last year that hit New York City and much of the northeastern US in August of 2003.

As one devoute smart-ass to another, I knew - was too busy to respond earlier.
Don't think you have the corner on that market either - I was involved in the creation of the mold that you came from Mike!

I always hold up my left hand whilst typing so that people know when I'm joking, it takes a bit longer to type your message that way, but at least everyone watching can see that you are typing in a 'good humour' kinda way

I was at work for most of it, but I'm told it was about 5½ hours.

Wait,... it is for-profit, and peopel do depend on it. |
It all comes at a price. UPS is cheaper than generators, but only to provide enough power for short outages or to bring systems down gracefully. So far, outage has been a real exception here I have no problem with the current availability level.

I really don't see what the problem is with DPC being down for several hours, certainly to the point of COMPLAINING about it. Jeez, you'd think there was nothing else to do in life..
