Once in a while a shot I feel deserves a second look as it may not have finished high in a challenge:

Such a shot is, in my opinion, one of the warmest, emotionally tender shots I have seen pass through here in a while. I may not have the Wow factor so many seek, but is a superb candid shot that in my opinion is perfect. Sheer unconditional happiness, forever captured in a 400th of a second. The title, while may seem too "cute" for many, is the real world.

Study it for a few and see if it doesn't put a smile on your face.

Get a print and hang it with pride Nick. My hat's off to you for your impeccable timing!

Brad...I agree, this was a nice capture. It doesn't have studio-esque quality to it, which is what I like...it's a real moment created by real people.

Not to hijack the thread at all, but rather along the same vein...I feel the same way about this photo from the 'Smoke' challenge by flip89:

Both this photo and the example you posted are photos which are truly worth 1000 words, rather than just going for the 'eye candy' approach.

Great work Nick and Ken...

While it is a gorgeous shot - and believe me, I have SO many similar, because of a newborn cousin of mine that I can't seem to put my camera down around....it does not complete the requirements for a BACKLIT photo, seing as how all of the lighting is coming off of his wife's left shoulder towards the front of the picture. Getting a low rating doesn't always mean it's not a wonderful picture - it just may mean it wasn't right for this challenge.

Please explain backlit to me, because I think it meets the requirements just fine!
I think this is a great capture and shows backlighting very well. I was afraid to vote on this challenge because of the low scores my entry was getting, but if I had voted, I would have given it a high mark. It's a beautiful, natural capture.

First off, let me give many thanks to BradP. I am touched that you like my image so much. It is very flatering.I can't even begin to express my grattitude.

In response to the image not fitting the challenge, don't worry, it does fit the challenge. The scene is backlit. If you look at the top of my daughters head you can see the light is right on top. Also if you look at the top of my wife's head and to the right of her face you can see that her hair has light shining through it showing that the light is coming from behind them. Just because my wife is turned slightly and I am at an angle to them does not mean they are no longer backlit. I do understand that some people feel in order to be backlit, the light has to be seen highlighted all around the subject. I know this is part of why the image did not score above average. People have different opinions on the challenges and I just accept that. I do not care though because I know it is backlit, after all I learned how to do it in school from many fine instructors.

Again just let me thank you Brad for you kind words.
