I've read a few posts discrediting both this and the French site that claims a new 22mp Canon will be released around the time of Photokina. I doubt that I'd be interested in a 22mp as that's just waaaaaay too close to professional type equipment. That's easily into MF territory and I'm guessing that a camera that competed on that scale would be terribly expensive. As it is, whenever Canon replaces their 1Ds (and hopefully this 16.7 CMOS based camera is actually going to be the replacement) then I'll consider any number of ways to get my hands on one of these.

hey kev, i read that the french one was supposedly just a hoax, but that this 16.7mp one is most likely the real deal. not sure how true that is, but just what i heard.
based on the current trend, i think it'd be more likely that we'd see the 16.7mp instead of 22. like you said, 22 is MF territory right now, like the MF backs from phaseone and the like.

Except that the medium format camera backs are S-L-O-W. The 22MP PhaseOne P25 can take one frame every 1.7 seconds (or 0.6 FPS if you'd rather express it that way). Not to mention the P25 costs $29,990 for just the digital back, not including the camera body or lenses. And note the difference between 22MP and 16.7MP: the P25 produces a file that is 5440 X 4080 pixels; the 1Ds Mark II 4992 x 3328. The difference isn't that much when you look at it that way...

I think Canon is knocking on the door of the digital camera backs (the little brother to the P25 is the PhaseOne P20 with "only" 16MP and costs $16,990)

16.7MP at 4 no-crop-factor frames/second. Yee-hah!

I went to the page but got a "page not found" notice.

However, the Luminous Landscape has got a teaser here.

For reference, DPReview's preview is here, Rob Galbraith's here...

It looks like dpreview has now posted a preview based on the official announcement from Canon.

I'm hoping that some nice 1Ds mkI bodies will show up at more reasonable prices once the mkII starts to ship.

And now I'm getting sick just thinking about how sold and balanced I bet that camera would feel in my hands. Ahhhhh. Jonesing to just open one of the images as a 16-bit, 95mb TIFF in PhotoShop.

I'm interested to see what kind of range it has with skin tones.

Probably beautifully smooth and realistic and wonderful and ... oh I feel something coming on...

But just wait a few months and Nikon will up the stakes further...

My interest at this point is whether $4K USD is going to get me something I want with a used 1Ds or if I should just suck it up and really screw myself monetarily for $7-8K for the newer body. I've been impressed with the few full-sized images that I've been able to get my hands on from a 1Ds but I'd like to see the output from the 1DsII. The 4 samples that Canon have on their site are resized down to 9mb. I'd like to see one or two portrait tests in RAW format that we the public could review. Then again, for $7K and with their track record I'm sure you're right and that it'll be a professional grade product.

This made me laugh. When does the 12MP D2X start shipping again? Oh yeah, two months after the just-announced 16.7MP 1Ds Mark II. And what kind of sensor is used in the D2X? Oh yeah, something outsourced from Sony... hehe... =]

What is reasonable? I'd rather have a new 1D Mk2 then a used 1Ds Mk1.
Especially when you know that the new 1D Mk2 has zero shutter operations, compared to a possible 100,000-200,000 on a 1Ds.

But I hate buying second-hand anything from motorcycles to cameras.
