I have the most difficult time trying to photograph my dog, whom I love very much and love to take photos of! Everytime I photograph him I get the 'green-eye' and using the 'red-eye' fix doesn't work. Any suggestions? Here are two shots I took recently that would be great if his eyes weren't messed up.

Also, here are a few shots of my cat. The close up one is new to me and I would appreciate some comments on it. I'm not that experienced with macro shots. The second one is purely comical :o)

Hi Dana ,

I like the photo of your cat very much ! Just have noticed some greenish pixels near the eyes (up) , it could be my screen but maybe it has been the selection when editing...
In any case, a beautiful cat and a great shot !

The current (print)issue of Petersen's Photographic magazine has a cover story about pet portraiture.

Never work with animals

Never work with children

Are you using a flash? If you use natural light you shouldn't have the problem with green eyes.

I like the close-up picture of your cat the best. The other pictures have too much distraction in the background and come out just looking like snapshots.

Try taking pictures outside or near a window to help with lighting.

Take a look at my pics for some ideas. (I am by no means the best one to give advice, having only taken photos seriously for less than 1 year, but I have received alot of advice that has helped me, whether big or small.)

Good luck!

A few weeks ago, I helped out the local Animal Rescue League by taking pet portraits for a small donation. Anywho...... I really enjoyed it, and I have a few of the pictures on My Website. There is one picture of a black cat with green eyes.... you should check it out! :)

Also, I agree with the flash vs natural light. The flash will cause their eyes to reflect light, but natural light will not do that. I TRY to always shoot outside. Not only that, but your colors will be truer.

The thumbnail of the cat close-up doesn't do that photo justice. I'm a dog person, through and through, but what a fabulous photo of your cat. I love the eyes and the details in the furr. Definitely frame-worthy... hang that puppy (er, kitty) up!!

Main rule of pet photography: TAKE THEM OUT OF DOORS!

Lol, seriously, natural light is THE best way to light up your pets unless you have equipment, flash just is horrible. All of my pet shots (of which I have quite a few) have been done using sunlight and they make me very happy. ^_^

Thanks for all the great advice. Looking at some of your pet photos in your portfolios make me very envious! I looked back through my stuff and my better photos of my dog were taken outside.. so I guess that is the main rule, Take Them Outside :)

Thanks Guys!

Sometimes you have to hold the cursor over it for a second or two. I am still working on the site :)

My cats are indoor-only, but I'm occasionally able to get great pictures of them near the big window in my living room. This one is my best, I think, of a foster cat of mine called Huxley:

You can see a bit of the window in the reflection in his eyes.
