I have been working on a price list and I wanted to see if I'm on a good track.

I have been asked by my work if they could hire me to cover awards banquets and such events and I have also been approched many times to do local sports individual and team photos.

Thats a great structure, but the prices are really low! I also lowballed myself when I started, but I have since seen how much goes into the prints. Other than the print cost. I am at 20 dollars a sheet, and most people still say I am very reasonable.

One more thing....you will get creamed with people just ordering 4x5's or 4x6's...believe me on that one! I took them out of my price list altogether. I only offer them as part of a bigger package.

That's a great point. I will definitely have to consider that. I don't want to work myself to death just for 4x5 and 4x6 prints.

Thanks again!

No problem...I have been working out the bugs this whole last year. And that has been one of my biggest problems. And underestimateing my time spend to reach the final product.

I would definitely agree with Brian about smaller prints being bought instead of larger prints.

Something I read on DPC way before I even started selling shots was that it's much easier to start off with higher prices then lower them than the other way around. I REALLY wish I'd heeded that warning. Of course I didn't listen, and I'm now in a situation of wanting to increase the prices but also not upset valued customers..

If you're getting into the event/sport photo gig, you might be interested in the forum in my sig..

Can you guys recommend how you would adjust my listed prices? $5.00 increase across the board, etc? Does the hourly rate seem about right and the prints are just low? Any additional help you can lend will be greatly appreciated!

The one thing I see that could become a nightmare is having the possibility of having to work up prints for so many different sizes. Could become a PITA. You may want to think about standard frame size:

4x6
5x7
8x10
11x14
16x20
Larger upon request pricing per print based upon amount of work needed to get the larger print.

Other than that, just be sure to charge a professional price if you're wanting to be a professional.

Great point about the standard sizes. Basically I just took what DPCPrints offers and mocked the list up using that. I will be printing all of my orders through DPCPrints to give them the business. I will definitely narrow the available prints considerably. Like you said, other aspects and sizes at special request.

That's the other part I'm trying feel out with this thread. For the sizes you listed above, what would the going professional pricing be?

Thanks for the help!

I started out using the DPCPrints list and went to standard sizes. I also got creamed with 4x5 and 4x6, which was horrible! I've since changed it to only offering 4x6 in the packages and standard frame sizes with the individuals. Also, I've found it doesn't work well offering people too many different choices, so eliminating some sizes really helped with that as well.

Good luck!

Looks good Bill. As stated before, those prices are pretty low. I can understand not wanting to charge too much, especially if you are just getting into it; but please don't sell yourself short. Look at the rates of other photographers in your area. If I were you, I'd double or even triple those prices.

here's my 2 cents.

Your hourly rate needs to be $200-$300 per hour. (you CANNOT rely on print sales. Act like there might not be any)
Minimize your print sizes to the standards only.
(4x6 $8, 5x7 $12, 8x10 $25, 11x14 $50, 16x20 $80, 20x30 $120) (or something similar, even numbers only, no cents)
Simplify all the packages. (3 packages only, charge way more than you are right now)

PM me for contract info.
