I`m not a great fan of waterfall pics..especially with the slow shutter speed effects which seem to be so commonly used for this type of shot...but maybe that`s because I`ve rarely seen one as captivating as this.
The composition, plus the subtle, subdued lighting combine to make this the outstanding image for me..out of three excellent efforts.
Beautiful work.

I avoided commenting earlier because I have been in a bit of a mood that I can't seem to shake -- I'm just not seeing the good in things like I normally do. Take the following with a grain of salt.
The waterfall has a lot of impact to it and is a very powerful image, but that brownish tinge really throws me off. I keep looking for an indication of why it is there, but have not found it. Your images are not such that I would expect to find a color-cast, so I am probably missing something.
The lighthouse is seriously lacking in contrast. The composition is great; but if you were going for a mood with the low contrast I'm afraid I am not 'getting' it.
The lightning is a wonderful capture, but without a point of reference to indicate the scale ... it is just streaks of light.
You did not mention how the judging will be conducted; but if it is judges by a panel of 'experts', then any of them are likely to do well, but if judged by the public the lighthouse would have a good chance if it had more punch.

David, thanks for your honesty. It's sometimes hard to be honest and pick apart someone else's work, but I wish more people would do it. It's the best way to learn. Thank you!
As for the brown tinge. It was taken a few days after heavy rains (Remnants of Hurricane Charley) and the water was very dirty. That's why the whites didn't get blown out. I did see the brown tinge and wondered if I should 'paint' it white to match the rest. Someone on another forum had commented that they kind of liked it, so I left it. *shrug* lol
I would love to know what others think about the tinge - keep it or paint it out?
Lighthouse - I see what you mean. Here's another verion. Do you think this is any better?
Larger version: Lighthouse 2
I again agree about the lightning. There's not much to the pic. I posted this as a choice because someone else said they liked it for a contest idea. I thought it may work because it wouldn't be a typical submission.
Judging is going to be by two local college art professors. The contest is being held just to get people out and shooting. There's no fee, but the winner will get a $250 gift certificate to the camera shop.
Thanks again, David, for your honesty and for taking the time to comment.

Thank you, I will try that.

Wow, Gordon, thank you! It's actually only my second real attempt at trying to 'veil'. Usually my whites and/or the sky is blown out. I'm hoping to get some filters soon to help with that.
I really appreciate your comment. Thanks a bunch!

Thanks to the rest of you who have commented. The results are interesting. I asked another forum to pick a shot - between just the waterfall and the lighthouse. The results there are 2 for the waterfall and 10 for the lighthouse. Go figure! :-)
Current stats:
Waterfall - 17.5
Lighthouse - 3
Lightning - 2.5
Thanks once again.

I would agree with the majority - waterfall first and lighthouse second. While the lighting photo is cool and can be difficult to capture, it lacks some punch that might be needed for a contest.
I think it's fine leaving the water the way it is instead of painting it.
Great work on all choices and I wish you the best of luck! :-)

I really like the lightning...
But think the waterfall would appeal to more people.

I like the waterfall best too. The movement in the water is just beautiful. |

I think one of the reasons I like this waterfall pic so much is because of the brown tinge..just about every river I could visit in Scotland would display this brown tinge from the peat which gets washed into it from the water running off the mountains.
Perfectly natural and most definitely part of it`s attraction.. to me.

Gordon, thank you. I did want to do the least amount of work on the image as possible. I think I will leave the tinge there. Thanks again.

All three shots are great, but I would have to pick the Lighthouse...
Can't put my finger on it, it just really appeals to me...
good luck, hope you win...

I was going to mention the sky noise in the Lighthouse, but I see you have already fixed it. Much better.
The waterfall is awesome with the rich colors. The colors are perfect. I go Waterfall 1st, lightning 2nd, Lighthouse a close 3rd. Great work, you'll probably win with the waterfall!

I think the waterfall shot is outstanding, I absolutely love it!!
However, I do agree with you Jen that the lightning is alot harder to take a shot of for anyone, I've never managed it, though it doesn't help that we don't get much here! lol!
If I were you, I would try and find another contest to enter the waterfall into if you're using the lightning for this particular one as I really think the waterfall deserves to be seen by as many people as possible, it's gorgeous.
