definitely cool in that it gives many more possibilities and features all in one body. and at 6.8mp on the 2x crop, you'd still be on par with current offerings in the sports market, and 2 mp's of the d2h.

*drool* I have to tell myself that if I want a year or two, I'll be able to have 12+ megapixels for a more reasonable price... and also tell myself that, yes, my D70 is still a good camera and still takes good pictures...

I'm worried that the D2X also will use the *lossy* compressed RAW format that the D70 uses. It discards enough information that the data goes from 12 bits of color resolution to about 9.4 bits. (Going from 4096 levels to only 683.) Anyone telling you that the D70 uses lossless compression for NEFs is WRONG.

Another article describes how it's not possible (without a really ugly hack) to take true raw images with the D70 because of a lowpass filter that seems to be applied.

skylen,
i'm missing something. i dont' understand how a low-pass filter prevents a true raw image. you mean a low-pass filter applied in softwarE?

Yes, the filter seems to be a way of masking some of the hot pixel CCD noise from long exposures. It's different than the 'NR' feature, which does a dark-frame subtraction. The low-pass filter is not selectable by the user and the page I linked to describes how turning _off_ the camera while it's exposing the dark frame for the NR will save the raw, unfiltered CCD data to the NEF file.

This doesn't bother me nearly as much as lossy NEF format though.

oh i see what you're saying about the filter. so yeah technically it's not a TRUE totally RAW file, but I guess I don't really see the benefit of removing that.

but anyway, back to the d2x. this thing is cool. there's some photos of the camera "in-hand" on www.photokin-show.com if anyone wants to check that out.

I hope their design for the camera isn't based on some noise reduction algorithm.

I hope it's based on microlens design changes.

you'll always have more noise the more pixels there are in a given noise. The question is, whether you can improve teh SIGNAL that comes into the camera (i.e. keep the signal-noise ratio high). If the power of the light comes is increased, then you won't see an increase in noise.

About the noise......
Just wait, it is a Sony CMOS sensor (instead of Nikon LBcast like the D2h), let's see what they are capable off.

I sooooooo wana get one....(droooooool)

Creative in-camera effects, Image Overlay and Multiple Exposure
The new Multiple Exposure function creates a single image from up to 10 exposures. As exposure for each image can be adjusted to prevent over- exposure, exposure for the final multiple-exposure image will be optimum. The Image Overlay function merges selected RAW (NEF) files already stored on the CF card to create a new image file within the camera. from NiknoPro.ca

I just bought a D70 and now I want this one. Sounds amazing, but here are a few things I'm REALLY waiting for:

ISO starting at 50
12 megapixel res or higher in sub $2,000 price range. ( sooner than we think)
"Foveon" type technology for Nikon, reading each color at each pixel.

At that point I'm not sure I'd EVER need another camera again.

I happen to think that's a fake though.
