Only a few weeks ago I launched my project to raise funds for wildlife conservation by selling 37 prints of photographs taken on a recent trip to Kenya. All images with DSWF in the title are part of this project.

On that trip to Kenya I met David Shepherd, the founder of the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation. His emotive accounts of the problems faced and his passion about being part of the solution made me keen to find ways in which I could support the work of the foundation.

So far, including Drew and Langdon's donation of their share of the profits, we have raised a wonderful $299!! That's TWO HUNDRED AND NINETY NINE DOLLARS!!!!

THANK YOU not only to those who have bought a print but also to those who have taken the time to forward the information and link (//kavey.dpcprints.com) to friends and colleagues who might be interested.

With your continued support I'd like to double that amount within the next few weeks. <>

If you can spare the change to buy even one small print, you'll be contributing to a very worthwhile cause. If you can pass the link on to 10 people you'll also be contributing to the project.

Thank you so much,
Kavita

It's a good cause, and the photos are kickass, so I've ordered a print. Can't wait for it to arrive... :o)

WOW Kavey, those pictures are great!!
I stumbled apon them when I looked in your portfolio. Looked for this thread afterwards as I was sure it would exist.
For anyone who hasn't looked yet then check them out. Click on "Kavey", Then "Recent Portfolio Additions" and then the folder "DSWF Kenya".

What lens were you using on those?

Thanks for your purchase... you are the first DPCer to purchase one of my charity prints and I've sent you a small print of one of my London black and whites to say thank you - I really appreciate it. I updated the figure raised in the first post after your purchase! $208!!!

Thanks Peter for your very kind comments. These images were all taken on my two Minolta 35mm film SLRs, one old and heavy, the other newer and lighter. I took both thinking the older one would just be back up incase of problems but in practice I kept the wide angle zoom on one body and the telephoto zoom on the other body and switched between both cameras almost constantly. I was shooting from within open landrovers and carrying the gear in a lowepro rucksack that I just kept open at my feet. The two lenses cover 28-135mm and 100-300mm and are both Sigma lenses.

I'd just like to ask that anyone considering purchasing one of these prints for charity access them via my referral link (in the first post or in my signature below) in order to ensure that the referral fee too goes to the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation.

Thanks again

What is the Wildlife Foundation and what do they stand for? ie their mission statement.

09/16/2004 11:25:54 AM · #7
Lori I provide a summary of who they are and what they do in the description of every print but let me copy it here for you:

The David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation achieves real results in conservation by supporting trusted, reputable individuals and organisations operating in the field. Lean on administration, generous on funding, money raised makes a direct difference to the survival of wildlife around the world.

If you'd like to learn more about what they do visit their website and follow links to What Do We Do? and read that page, which lists the current projects they support.

To give you an idea: they support groups which fight against poaching, educate against trading in endangered animal products, support the establishment and maintenance of wildlife reserves and so forth.

As an organisation they take a lot of care only to support work that truly achieves results and have a dedicated team working to raise funds and awareness.

I'm trying to help them raise funds that will go towards conservation work.

Thanks Deannda!
This is all so overwhelming.
I'm so thrilled this project is going so well.
The charity are also going to add a link to their main website, hopefully won't take too long for their web volunteer to add it, so that will hopefully increase traffic and sales further.
$299!
Who'd have thunk it?

DSWF have just added my link to their website in two places, just as I suggested. There's a link from the homepage that says "How can I help?" and I'd suggested changing the previous 5 ways to 6 ways and adding a page to encourage people to raise funds themselves. They added the page and used my suggested text too. There's also a link on the homepage to a list of links they recommend and they have added me there too.

I hope that will lead to some more sales, and at the very least, it raises the profile of DPC Prints in another arena.

That's brilliant, thank you very much indeed.

Hmmmm... do you think that I'm a kavey virus? LOL

YAY THE ARRIVED!!

My photo doesn't do them justice, but they're really nicely finished. Nice amount of border, really nice vibrant colours and contrast. The right one is on glossy paper and the left on matte. I'm normally not too keen on matte, but it works great with the B&W.

When framed they'll be hung in my new house.

Thanks Ellen for letting me know about the latest posts to this thread. I had missed them, somehow!

They look great Paul, thanks so much. I really appreciate you posting to let us see what they look like... it's very cool!

Ellen, in answer to your (PMed) question on the borders, I add a reasonably generous border so that, if the prints are cropped slightly off kilter matting can be used to resolve the problem. That said, none of the prints I've ordered so far have had poor cropping.

My copy of 'Across the Masaai Mara' arrived this morning, and it's an amazing print! Kudos to both Kavey and DPCPrints! Now to find somewhere to hang it...

Thanks Manic!
Glad you like it.

How is the texture looking? I used neatimage on most of the prints but I was very careful not to overdo it. I used it to lose the grain introduced by the scanning of the film negatives but didn't want to lose any detail in the images themselves so I was quite light with it's application. It did make a huge difference on grain but seemed not to oversmooth the actual details.

In your opinion does the print look over smoothed or did I hit upon the right neatimage settings?

PS Mike, thanks for your comment. Fancy a print for yourself? ;o)

Did you not get my PM with the thread URL in, Kv?

My borders were a lot small than they look on the 640px DPC image. I'd say on a 10" x 8" they're about 0.25" each edge - just about perfect.

I've left the print at home, so I'll let you know this evening, but my first impression was positive :o)

I did but I also got a PM from Ellen and as hers was sent after yours it was higher in my hotmail inbox and I read it first! I did respond to your PM already though!

That's good to know, thanks.

They aren't absolutely identical number of pixels wide in each image though. I probably should have been more consistent but didn't work out that way.

Thanks for catching up with me in chat. You said it's quite soft, like a watercolour, when viewed close up but looks more detailed when viewed from a distance (presumably as it would be when up on a wall).

I checked original file and print file and realised I was thinking of Blue and Gold when I was thinking about the neatimaging.

This image (Across the Masaai Mara) is one I did neatimage on higher settings (I created the profile but then applied it on 60% or something instead of 100%). I preferred the softer, painted look on this image and detail didn't seem to suffer as there weren't many sharp lines. I could still identify the various blades of grass though they were softer. That said I've zoomed in and compared the truck in both original and print files and I don't think too much detail has been lost by the neatimaging.

Let me know if you're truly happy with it.

I'm absolutely happy to re work it, reload it and send you a reprint if you'd prefer. Just because it's for charity doesn't mean you shouldn't be 100% happy with the print.
