From an e-mail just received from Nikon UK:

The D2X professional digital SLR boasts 12.4 million effective pixels, which capture the ultra-high levels of resolution and sharp detail that professional photographers demand, with exceptionally fast, easy and intuitive handling to create a digital camera which is set to become the new benchmark by which all others will be measured. Improved 3D-Color Matrix Metering II, precise white balance metering and Nikon's new high-resolution image processing engine all ensure outstandingly pure colour rendition and beautiful reproduction of skin tones. Instant power-up
combines with immediate shutter response, continuous shooting at full 12.4 megapixel resolution of five frames per second (for 15 consecutive NEF images) or eight fps in 6.8 megapixel High Speed Cropped mode (26 NEF images), and a fast, precise 11-area autofocus system to offer superlative speed of use. Optional add-ons include the WT-2 Wireless Transmitter, offering faster transfer speeds (iEEE 802.11g)and greater security options. With a lightweight, durable magnesium-alloy body which will withstand the toughest of environments and treatments, the D2X goes on sale from January 2005, priced £3,499.99 (body only).

But cameras in America are much much cheaper and the ratio is nearer to 1:1 so in America it will probably cost about $4000.

So, is this Nikon's response to Canon or will there be a Canon response to the D2X?

I believe there's been rumours of a 1Ds mkII?

I have had one on order since July. I traded my two Nikon D1x cameras and my Nikon 5700 in to hold my place in the delivery queue. They say shipping in January, but it has been suggested that February or March are more realistic, at least here in Canada.

It does appear that the prices will be slightly lower in North America as was suggested. I am still not at liberty to say what the pricing is until the formal announcements at Photokina next week. I hope to see it at the show (under glass) in Germany.

just wait 1 year when several 12+ meg models are available. The price will likely drop down to 2k
but I don't know if I can wait.

Anyone want to buy a D100?
hehe

The Wi-Fi option is awesome

Ive heard that more pixel capability in same size chips make for a noisy picture when taken at speeds 400 up. If this is true does the D2x have a larger chip to support the larger number of pixels?

All other things being equal, yes. I would imagine that in this case all things are probably not equal.

No, it´s DX format or 1.5x Crop Factor. Like Canon, Nikon has preserving his crop factor. This can be noted in the DX lens line up as well as Canon EF-S line up. This means that we´ll have FOV in a long time yet.

Canon 20D puts down this concept. It is an 8MP in the same sensor size of the 10D 6.1MP. Theory of pixel sixe x noise is only real if you made no change in other features.

nobody knows the actual price yet.

this looks like it's gonna be an awesome camera. the high speed 2x crop mode is pretty cool, and wi-fi is awesome. can't wait to see test images out of it.

Uh, well, if you read the last line of the original message, the price IS £3499.99. It's not a guess, it's Nikon's quoted price.

I stand corrected, albeit i am sitting...

i didn't read that last line before. the previous thread i just came from before reading here had no known price yet... so, my mistake :)

so then to answer the original question of who has 3500 to spend on it.. well the pros do... but not me! hehe ;)

this is definitely a great addition to the line of pro cameras currently available. i can't wait to see how the images from this compare to say the fuji S3. cooooool.

i just read the review on rob galbraith's site... i just saw the 4-channel histogram. now that is cool. i know quite a few nikon shooters that have been complaining about not having an rgb histogram.

The 2x FOV/crop mode sounds awesome for sports shooting. I hope Canon follow suit (and that there's no st00pid patents to stop them).
