I was going to get the battery grip for my 300d, but I use a flash bracket that would either get in the way of the second button, or be on the wrong side of the camera (flash on the bottom). I did buy a second battery, but I get 500 to 800 shots per battery when using an EX550 flash.

I didnt read all the posts, did you get an external flash unit? I got the Sigma EF 500 DG Super recenlty and couldn't be happier with it. I thought about forking the extra money and getting the EX 550 but i"m glad I didn't as the Sigam meets my needs just fine. I use Cokin P series filters and I'm also satisfied with them. I have a linear polarizer that hasnt given me any trouble. I also bought a Lumiquest Big Bounce light diffuser for the Sigma flash and it gives pretty good results. Now I'm selling my non IS 75-300 lens to either get the IS or save it towards a better, longer lens. You're right, this DSLR stuff IS expensive!

I already have a Canon 420EX flash, and a stroboframe grip, but what I'd like better is one of those Metz (?) flashes where the flash is on a vertical post to the side of the camera. I think they're expensive -- but I can't remember the flash name/number to find it.
