How can you tell if lunch meat has gone bad? I made myself a sandwhich this morning (in the morning, all lunch meat smells rotten) and I'm not sure if the meat is still good.

It's not slimy yet, so that's a good sign. I bought the package about a week ago and it's been unopened in my fridge since then.

There's no "best before" date and no discolouration so far...can somebody help me out?

Edit: More info. It's smoked turkey and I'm already eating it because I'm hungry...

Be generous. If the recipient of your generousity doesn't get sick, then you can eat it.

To put this in perspective: how good can a compilation of lips and a**es possibly smell?

True, but I'm not looking for nicely-scented lips 'n bum, I just want to know if it's rotten.

To be safe, I'm drinking Coca-Cola. The acid should take care of any bacteria...

Is it from the deli or is it that prepackaged stuff? The prepackaged stuff can actually last way longer than you think it should but the deli stuff goes bad in a matter of days. If it doesn't smell bad and tastes alright, you're probably fine.

And I don't think turkey is made from lips and asses.

Well, it does smell bad...but that's always the case.

It's actually the prepackaged stuff from Schneider's or something.

Edit: As for taste, it's pretty good!

eat it and follow up with a hot chilli and beer later, that should destroy any nasties :)

Update:

Sandwich completed. No major side effects. Moving on to crackers.

i ate rotten salami once, i couldnt get the taste out of my mouth for like 5 hours. usually my guage on whether or not lunch meat is bad is if it has mold, or is furry, or is moving.

The packaged stuff lasts longer because of all the extra preservatives - which if you suffer from migraines you can attest to this [nitrates - preservatives - cause migraines].

It's the same stuff that gives bologne and hot dogs that rain-coat like texture.

Well, let's have a toast to nitrates! They saved me four bucks on lunch meat as well as ten bucks on Immodium (bum-juice medicine).

I wouldn't eat anything that smells rotton... just basic rule to live by!

Deli turkey should have basically no smell when it is fresh. As it ages it will begin to smell sweet. I would throw it out a day after you notice it starting to smell sweet.

As the aroma continues to increase and become sweeter you'll notice the meat starting to get slick and it may become shiny. By this time though the meat is well on its way.

It's interesting to note that most of us have vastly different ideas about what is good meat today than we did a hundred years ago. It used to be considered a delicacy to hang your catch (deer, pheasant, etc) up outside and age it before consumption. In the case of waterfowl strung up by the neck until the body falls off. It sure made the meat soft and tender and provided certain flavor components you won't find any other way. But most people today would be repulsed by the idea of intentionally eating rotten meat as this thread testifies.

In the end though, your body's natural defenses will protect you from an occasional bad sandwich. You may not like how it protects you but you'll but you'll live.

I reckon we all have weak stomachs now. In the old days of waiting for the neck to drop off people would have probably been much less picky about food (cause they didn't know what food poisoning was.... a witch did it!! Which witch?)

I was in Thailand for a while and it took a fair amount of time before i could eat with locals without getting the old dodgy insides. Your body builds a resistance to the bacteria and becomes stronger.

Maybe its a good idea to eat some old meat every now and again............ can someone try iot and let me know how you get on ;)

Well, it's day two of the questionable lunch meat and lunch starts in ten minutes. Wish me luck, as I'll be pushing the limits of nitrates as the week progresses.

Hope to find you alive and well.
Just a basic info, in worst cases eating bad meat lead to death. If you're alive I suppose it is a good sign.

If in doubt - never eat. Pizza sounds just fine.

But don't throuw the remains!!! Think how they can help you out in the next challenge!! Be creative! After all, you did survive...

Reminds me of the old Gallagher bit about chemicals where he talks about people who eat "too healthy" and then one day get laid out dead when they eat a hotdog with all its chemicals.
