I'm really disappointed in the score that my photo of Ned Kelly received in the Travel Guides challenge. I felt it was a good take of a local icon. This Statue of Ned Kelly greets visitors into our town near the main entrance and visitors are always stopping there to have their photo taken with him.
The criteria said. "Take an image that represents an area as a visitor might see it." Well maybe I made a mistake when I read that but a visitor would normally be standing at the base looking up and this is what they would see.
Do you think it didn't deserve a score of 4.251? Please tell me why!

I gave it a 6. In my comments I indicated I felt the image was a bit intimidating. I still feel that way. Also, the title really threw me off and it made me question the subject matter's relevance to the theme. Regardless, I liked the shot and the clouds behind it.

Your title threw me off as well, and I didn't think it was very strong on a "Travel Guides" POV. Like *I'm* supposed to know who Ned Kelly is, simply from a photograph like that. I felt as if you were trying to scare off visitors, not invite them to travel..
Perhaps if the title was simply, "Ned Kelly - Australian Icon" or something of the sort..
I gave it a 5.

I scored it a 7, somehow the humour just clicked with me.

I don't think people in other parts of the world get the "big" thing... Like the big banana, big pineapple and in this case big Ned Kelly. I recognised it straight away and thought it was a great take on the challenge. In the context of this site the appeal is lost. Don't let it get you down 'cos if this was an Aussie site you would get third behind the big banana and the big pineapple ;)

lol Steve! I just don't see why people need to recognise it or even feel like it attracts them to the place, its a photo contest not a desirable destination contest and "Travel Guides" are used to display what is in an area. There are multi photos and paragraphs of text with explanations we have 1 photo and a title!
Oh well! Get over it Bob! *Slaps self in the face*
Shees 1% of the vote though, only way is up from here.

Yeah, I was very surprised indeed how low old Ned came.
With hindsight it might indeed be a factor of Aussies getting it more than others, and thus for many it did not make sense for a travel guide photo :(

Amen! And that's exactly why I decided to illustrate Hurricane Frances as she travelled across Miami. It's funny because almost everyone knows you don't visit Miami during hurricane season and that type of info is most communicated in Travel Guides.

i like your take on the challenge. it might have scored higher if you had laid down on the ground from a position that would have included not only the whole statue, but some context as well. that way you could have maintained the interesting viewpoint. |

Perhaps people dont want to travel to a place where a really big outlaw is standing over them in an intimidating pose with a really big gun.
I think the voters that weren't from this part of the world wouldn't of known about bush rangers so it was probably lost on them. Good on you for thinking outside the square. I was quite surprised to see it finish as far down the ratings. Technically, I thought it was quite a good photograph. |

I did want to do that, not sure if you can see it in the other shot but the paint is pealing below the belt and it would have looked like S... Bad. lol

Mmmm and probably heightened with all the terrorist attacks etc. We don't seem to have the sort of problems that Americans have with taking photos of rail lines and buildings etc either.

Thanks for saying that, as a learner I was really proud of the photo and that probably heightened my disappointment.

I think it is to show a place where people would like to travel to and it should show it as a desirable destination if I have read the challenge correctly studies that might be used in a travel guide book to your chosen destination.
So no it's not just a photo contest, but one for a certain aspect for all to see,and to draw them to a area for vacation, Isn't it ? You wouldn't see photo's of porta potties at a big country fair just because they were there. I think the main problem with this pic is no one knows who or what it was, maybe if you could have shown the who statue it might have helped. Good luck on the next challenge |

Mmmm well I disagree with you there, that does not mean I'm right and you are wrong that just means we have a difference of opinion. I do however think that you would have the majority vote as I think that is how most people viewed the challenge. Thanks for the luck, and yeah doing much better! :)

I gave it a 6. The photo struck me as ironically funny.
By the way, who is Ned Kelly? |

I gave it a 6 also, I don't think it deserved such a low ranking over all. It was pretty funny. maybe the title through some people off?
