hey, im getting a 20d soon and need a 2.8 zoom. I have two options, the canon EF 80-200 2.8 L for 650 or the EF 70-200 2.8 L USM for 800. Both are in Mint condition, which would you choose and why?

$150 is a lot of money... I'd get the cheaper one if they're pretty similar. |

The 70-200mm f/2.8L is one of the best lenses ever made by Canon. Well worth the extra money.

Both rate very high on Photodo and PhotoZone. The 70-200 is the newer model with the fast focusing Ultrasonic Motor. The 80-200 is an older model no longer in production, and therefore more diffcult to find. If they are really in mint condition you won't go wrong buying either one. If you want to shoot action, the faster focusing may be the determining factor.

the focusing speeds seem to be pretty similar, with the USM being just a little faster. Has anyone here actually used both lenseS?

I am getting a 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM myself; I have the cheapo 75-300mm and I'm not happy with the speed and sharpness at all. Where are you seeing it for $800? Cheapest I've found is a little over $1,000 for non-IS and $1600 for IS. |

I guess it depends on if you think USM is worth $150..
I've got the 70-200/2.8L myself, and it is a fantastic lens.
I guess a lot depends on the age of the 70-200 you have the option to buy. Although the design is newer than the 80-200, it is, in relation to the IS version, still quite old.. (I believe early 1999 or older?)

Personally, I wouldn't consider any non USM lens from Canon. My 50mm macro is LOUD when it focuses since it's non-USM. The 70-200mm USM has high marks at photo.net so take a look there, too for more info. Although they do not include the 80-200, this link might be useful: //www.photo.net/equipment/canon/300D/EOS_300D_lenses.html
Hope that helps!
