Having only a limited budget and needing to buy lenses as well as a flash, which do you would be the best buy?

A 300D with battery grip
18-55mm lens(as in kit)
70-200mm non IS Canon lens
512mb Sandisk CF card
Holdall
for £899 - $1500?

Or a used D60 with battery grip for about £650 - $1200?

Can't afford 10D or 20D at this moment, although things may change in next couple of months.

Any help would be useful, thanx.

Sorry, lens is 75-300mm non USM f4

Offer is in UK at Warehouse Express.

The 300D is a better camera than the D60. It's got more focus points..

I'd say for 900 squid that's not a bad deal..

Edit: Whoops, the D60 has the same res.. The 300D does have more ISO levels, and probably better sensitivity.

That's the line I'm thinking along, but I don't want buy, then regret it 2 months later. The D60 belongs to my neighbour and price might vary a little, however backward technology is not always a good thing.

Thanx for your advice.

Ignore me there - the 300D doesn't have higher res than the D60 - both are 6.3 MP.

I've been using a D60 all year, much better camera body than the 300D. You can walk in to a shoot [okay, so let's say a wedding] and not have 10 other people with the same camera looking at you like you're an amateur.

Oh and using the focus points can get you in to trouble in fast paced situations! Personally I keep all my cameras set to centre-focus automatically. Makes it MUCH easier to recompose a photo while keeping sharp focus.

P.S. I bought a 300D but never used it, used the D60 instead for paying gigs....

You may want to check the reviews of each camera at dpreview.com I find this site very useful when looking for new cameras.

Wolfie, I've said it in other threads and I'll say it here. The 300D is a fine camera and will make a very nice upgrade to your Fuji. You need to examine what your photographic goals are, of course, but the 300D has most if not all the features most photographers would need. Especially if you install the firmware hack. Your glass is a very important consideration - if you can afford the 10D (or the 20D) but then can't buy quality glass, guess what? Your pictures will show it.

As for the 300D being used for 'professional' purposes, go for it. I've seen it done and if somebody gives you a hard time about it, tell them they are welcome to buy you a new camera at their convenience. Don't fall for that 'elitist' crap! The pictures are what matter. Good luck to you and let us know what you decide! :-D

I think that was a pretty succinct reply! And what you say makes sense. I am not, nor will ever be a professional. 300D is looking like a good prospect, will kepp you all informed as to final result.

Unfortunately not, looks like a good event (as you would expect), but it̢۪s a little bit too far to travel with out a magazine contract. How do you know about the Windsor event, are you a carriage driver or just a fan? :)

I live in Ascot, 6 miles from the driving course. It used to come thru part of Ascot Racecourse a few years ago.

I love my Digital Rebel and think it would be an excellent choice. I don't find that people look at me like, "your going to take pictures with that you armature?". Instead, I find many people commenting on how nice of a camera I have and that I must be a professional.

I think it's more important for your photos to say professional rather than your equipment say professional. Just my opinion though. Everyone has their own. :o)

Good luck!

Oh, yea... ...get the portrait grip if you can swing the extra $100. You wont be sorry! Besides, it makes the camera look more professional. LOL!!! ;o)

Honestly, I love my portrait grip!

the poser posted by wolfie is something i would consider also... i've seen D60's go on ebay for less than a new 300d/rebel/kiss. i've followed the link above, and it tells me the 300d is better because of the 1600 iso, extra white balance setting and is 210grams lighter (though the latter can be explained by the (inferior?) plastic body). how much of a better camera do these advantages make - or is there other stuff that should be considered?

i really do want to get myself a dslr sometime soon. i recently played with my dads traditional film slr the other day, and totally fell smitten in love with it (especially when i saw the picture i took with it). it has to be a canon (that way i can borrow dads lenses from him, though he doesn't know that yet), and ideally, it should be less than 800 quid including lens. anymore than that i don't know... out of interest, does anyone know a good store in greater london that sells re-conditioned cameras?

I have this same setup and it has worked quite well for me. Of course I would like nothing more than to own the 20D with the 70-200mm IS f/2,8 lens but I think I'm going to work a little bit more on my skills before spending that amount of money.

The battery grip ... just love it. It's a must have !

I have a similar set-up and very pleased with it.

However if i were you i would save for the 20D as it has a great spec.
You can get a 20D body for a bag of sand and pick up a kit lens on ebay for 60 quid. You could probaly live without the grip on a 20D. Non is canon lenses are cheap as chips.
For about £200 more than you want to spend you could have 20D, kit lens and 256mb (£17)card. And add other lenses and bits when you saved up.

Man get the D60 - it will last you years longer. Even after bying it used.

The 300D feels like a toy camera. Hold hem both and see which you like the feel of best.

Yep, how can 1,510 300D owners be happy with their cameras...

And 20 million + have owned a disposable so that's where your point ends.

Have you ever held a real camera? Like the D2H for example. I don't know why people get so defensive of their cameras. I am not getting at your camera, merely stating that it isn't made as well as the D60, and in comparison it feels like a little toy.

That is pretty much a given, and half the reason it's so cheap.

The same as the D70 and D100 does against the D2H et al.

perhaps it's your delivery ... i have a 300D, and I can assure you ... it is a real camera.

yes ... I know what you mean, I'm just explaining why one would get defensive.
