Yep, people come at night, tired, grouchy, and vote the pics down! It's always lower in the morning.

I'll tell you what frustrates me in the low voting here:
If you gaved me a low score - that's ok. You couldn't possibly just looove everything. But why can't you also tell me WHAT it was that you didn't love. If it's a matter of technique, maybe I could learn from this on how to do better next time?

I am in agreement to Jinijt. Vote low, but let me know what I am doing wrong.
I think the system should be set so, that when one is giving a 1, 2 or 3 some text is compulsory. If they want to be "incognito" (chickens), one should maybe be able to hold the signature back.
Any comments ??? |

People tend to rate another persons photo based on their own rather then if it is better. When you submit a picture do you really think its a 10??? of course cuz its YOUR picture BUT if you forget about YOUR score and judge it based on a grade like in school where a %50 is a pass then you should get better scoring overall.

There are several threads already on this. You'll either get no 1, 2 or 3 votes or those votes will be accompanied by text like 'a' or whatever key they hit before moving on. Voluntary comments tend to me more thought out and useful.

this is a tough one to vote, because there are a lot of great images.
i think lack of comments can be due to any number of reasons:
1) the image is ok, but no real wow;
2) 300+ images, hard to comment on all the ones you score 5,6,7
3) some people complain they get no comments, then they complain about the comments ("whaddaya mean, it doesn't meet the challenge?!?")
you need to consider your entry very objectively in terms of how you interpreted "backlighting" and how others see it. if you think it means lit slightly behind and from above while shooting dead on, you might have a nice image that doesn't score as well as one with the light source directly above a subject with the camera directly below it.
i thought i had a decent entry until i really, really looked at all the other ones... |

If you like your picture that's what's important. The rest is immaterial...

I just finished my initial run-through of Backlighting last night. At 370+ photos, it took awhile. Overall, I'm very impressed by the quality of the submissions. There are some real standouts (lots of them, I think).
My daughter, Smartypants, is sitting at a 6.7 right now, and is thrilled to be getting some VERY laudatory comments.
Dad (me) is sitting at 5.6 and preparing for another "middle of the pack" finish, but loving it, because, as doctornick said, I LOVE my photo! |

Agree. But the key is "If they want to be "incognito" (chickens), one should maybe be able to hold the signature back."
I think that way people would not be afraid to leave comments.

I really think that is an unfair generalization. I'm sure some do this but my feeling is that more often, people judge the photos on their own merits. I certainly recognize when (to me) a photo is better than mine and have no problems rating them high - higher than what my perceived score will be.
When I vote photos low, it's because they don't meet *my* interpretation of the challenge or they are just not very good photos in general.
This forum is made of a whole lot of different personalities, each with different thoughts about what they like and dislike. My training is in engineering, and thus I tend to hold the line on the verbage of the challenge, I can't help it, it's who I am. Many others are much more liberal in interpretations, more of a trait of the "artist", I think.
But it's all good, as long as people make comments. I try to comment on 20%. Not a lot of people comment on the middle of the road photos - I have one in Travel now that it 5.7 rating, 174 votes, 0 comments
Sorry, this got long winded

My problem was that 20% of 300+ took a whole lot longer than 20% of 100+. I also comment on all 1, 2 and 3s. Also 10, 9 and 8s. Then in between any that catch my eye for some reason, but don't necessarily rate higher or lower because of it. Gets rather time consuming. Wish it was possible to do more.
