That's a drag--it changed the pre-ones to Rebel too. I thought it would keep my old camera listed, and then I would officially change over in this thread. Bummer. |

I have the kit lens. I've been studying lenses for a couple of days.
Right now, I am leaning towards the Canon IS USM 28-135mm as a general purpose lens. But I've been reading such good things about the 70-200 F4L. Though I want something I would be willing to carry around. Considering the shorter Canon DO lens as well. I need to be able to try things out, somehow. I don't know if Ritz will let me do that, but that's really the only camera store around, excluding super-electronic type stores.
What do you suggest? For my "art", I like taking landscapes and macros. And of course, I want to shoot my kids, and shoot at their school concerts, family affairs.
My transportation for outdoor shots is usually my bike. I have a tripod and monopod, but I don't carry them on my bike.
Now: I would be willing to spend around $1200 or so total for my whole lens suite.
Ideas are welcomed! |

Although the 70-200mm f/4L is my favorite lens, you won't want to carry it around on a bike every day- it's HUGE. I would suggest you get a sharp, general purpose lens like the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di ($360). Throw in the Canon 50mm f/1.8 ($75), the Canon 70-200mm f/4L ($579), and a reverse coupler for macros (about $8) and you've got a really nice set for all purposes.
The new, image-stabilized Canon F4-5.6, 17 - 85 mm EF-S ($599 list) is worth a look, too. That's a great zoom range for a walk around lens. |

I have both a sigma 24-70 2.8, and a 70-200 2.8 and I LOVE them both! I would LOVE canon glass, but these are nice solid lenses!

Thanks Shannon--I was trying, at least for now, NOT to buy something that overlapped the new Canon EF-S lens coming out which looks very nice, and also, in the mean time, not to overlap the kit lens. I haven't had the camera long enough to be disappointed in the kit lens. In fact, I've been busy and only really snapped a few shots around the house just to learn the features.
The one reservation I have about the 70-200mm L lens, besides size and weight, is that it's not stabilized. So even if I put it on a rack on my bike rather than my waist bag, I would also need to carry a tripod.
But I do want a lens that will wow me!

Overlapping is unavoidable really, and probably a plus. When you want to carry just one lens for a day trip, you'll be thankful that your all-purpose lens has that extra reach. If you do get the new 17-85 EF-S, you can always eBay the kit lens.
The 70-200 will definitely wow you, and you don't always need a tripod. A lens that long is used outdoors, where it's usually bright enough to get a good shutter speed. This shot was taken handheld at full zoom the first week I had that lens:
