I normally don't complain about crap in forums, but I really feel alone on this site as no one seems to like my style of non-portrait photography. I don't feel that every shot I take is blue worthy, or even any ribbon worthy. But as the scoring goes i'm below 5 and that doesn't sit well with me. All my photos fit the challenges to a T, yet I get low votes. Maybe people are not able to see things how I see them, and for that I understand how they do not understand. What I don't get is when I meet the challenge with a technically correct photo and people rate it low because they don't like the prop I used, or think they know something about stuff they know nothing about. They comment on irrelevant things. I have yet to see any of my photos actually judged on if they met the challenge. Most of them are judged poorly because I used a 'star wars figure' or commenting on what kind of pregnancy test is in the photo, this to me is ludicrous. Anyone else feel the same way?

You have to know a few things about this site. This site should mainly be used for you to learn, and also to show off your work. Most of the time the best photos, in my opinion, do win. But there are alot of people out there that want to see cute pictures of flowers, puppies, babies, and anything else you would find on a Hallmark card. These people sway the vote so much that great photos sometimes don't get their due ranking, and it is for that reason I just shoot for myself and make a photo I love, not trying to please others. I was a bit ticked off when I started here to, but that has all gone away now, and the people that really do like my work show it by commenting and choosing my photos as favorites. Don't let this site get to you, because if you let it, it will make you hate this site and then you might as well just move on because you won't be benefiting yourself anymore. That's just how I feel.

very well said, I understand magicshutter I sometimes feel the same way but I have learned to just laugh it off and move on to the next challenge. I am here for me and I have learned a lot from this site. Hang in there. I really like your work. |

I want to thank everyone for their kind words. I'm really trying hard not to take this site personally, but it's really hard to continue on something when you get brow beaten regularly.
Thanks again

Don't let it bug you too much. I felt the same way for a while. Then I started looking at some of the commentators photos. Some are really nice and some look like they have been taken with a box brownie with a broken lens (exageration)(Can't spell either:)) Just enjoy what you are doing. Your work is personal to you and if you like it that's all that counts. On the other hand some people on this site are really helpful, they are the people that we can learn from.
Cheers mate and keep up the great work.

Well Joe, what I see is that you are confident enough in your own abilities, and perceptive enough to see clearly enough that you do good work despite any comments you may receive. Just keep up doing the good work, and though this is a competitive site in many ways, it is only deceptively so, IMO. Most folks here support one another and congratulate each other when they do well. I think just about any ribbon winner here can site examples of folks who participate on the site who have never won a ribbon, but who are very excellent photographers.
So keep up the good work and show us more!

A couple things that help me. First is that people don't vote properly. They vote 1-10. The correct way to vote is 5-10 unless it doesn't meet the challenge. If they think a photo isn't very good it'll get a 3, even if it met the challenge and is technically sound.
The second thing that helps me is to rate the photos on a curve. If the bluer ribbon entry has a score of 7.5, I pretend that 7.5 is a 10, making my 4.87 a score of 6.49. Make sense?
