I seem to be stuck in "boring mode". I would like to reshoot this if it's not too late (I have no idea when these are harvested). I was only able to stop for a few minutes for this shot and it was raining.
What do you think would make this field of sunflowers a better shot?
Thanks. |

It all depends what you want from the final image.
Some things to try...
1. Small DOF - isolate one of the flowers
2. Large DOF - crop just above the top of the flowers in the background, have the rows on more of an angle. Diagonal lines add tension to the image and can add interest.
3. Early morning - if there's some mist in the air this could be interesting.

If it's an option, you might wanna bring a ladder with you and shoot from a higher perspective. You'll get more of the sunflowers in the frame and less of the background trees. There might also be some interesting patterns that you could only see from shooting from above.

I agree about getting up higher. If you could use a wide angle lens, get closer and have the back of the sunflower field just out of the frame, you'd have large sunflowers in front, and tiny sunflowers in back and it would give the viewer the impression that they go on for miles. Beautiful scene, by the way!

Thanks for the input. I was thinking at the time I shot this that "I wish I had a ladder". I stood up on the door jamb of my suv and remember thinking that it was a useless effort because I was hand holding my heavy wide angle lens.

I agree with a higher viewpoint, but I think that losing the trees would help - the sunflowers do contrast nicely with the wooden fencing.

Another option is to focus vertically on One standout sunflower preferably one a bit taller than the rest and let all the others form a pleasant blurred and dappled background. |

Me ... i would go lower, at a angle to miss out the trees at the back, when it's a blue sky ....focusing on one sunflower... |
