I have had a very interesting last couple of weeks. I got a new camera, upgraded to OS X Panther, and also upgraded to CS. Now my question is, I downloaded the new raw plug-in for the Mark II. I switched out the old plug-in with the new one just like it said to do, but I still can't get a raw image to open up in CS. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

For PS to recognize your image, make sure it has an understandable extension on the end of it like .jpg or .tif. I don't own a Canon, but I believe most good Canons like the one you have works in RAW mode, so you'll have to export the file in some way to be a .jpg or .tif or other file that PS can recognize.
Good luck!

Erm I don't shoot in raw mode but CS should recognise a raw image and allow you to open it. Maybe download the new plug-in again and reinstall it? do you still have the old plug-in?

Yes I still have the old plug-in, but it wouldn't work anyway because it didn't support the Mark II. |

In CS you are supposed to be able to open the RAW image just as is I thought. |

You don't need to download any plugin at all to open raw files with Photoshop CS. I have a Mac running OS 10.3.5 and Photoshop CS with no downloaded plugins. I just took a RAW picture titled "CRW_2780.CRW" and opened it with no problem in CS. I just used the File->Open command and also tried dropping the RAW file on the application icon and both worked just fine. Let me know if you try that and it still doesn't work.

Ahem. I believe you need a RAW plug-in if your camera firmware is not in the original CS RAW plug-in.
Once you plug your Compact Flash Card or Camera into your computer....Open CS go to Browse. Then My Computer and select the card reader or camera.
Your images will open up on the CS browser. Double click them there to work on them. When you save the changes save it to file on your computer and it will be automatically saved as a .jpg
The original raw image will still be on your flash card until you "move" it to your computer.
Clear as mud? |

Right, Bongo, if the the CS RAW plugin doesn't work for your camera's RAW files, then I suppose a download would be necessary. It worked perfectly for mine without downloading anything, so I didn't have to figure that part out.
But I always move pictures to my hard disk before working on them. I still consider CF cards to be a slightly less reliable medium than hard disks so I copy them all over before doing any editing then erase the card. I have had problems in the past with other removable media failing while working with data that was still on the removable media, so I don't take any chances like that any more. Maybe I'm being overly cautious.

To answer some questions, yes I have tried opening the images by both opening CS then going to open file and I also dropped the icon on the CS icon. I did try to pull the images off the card and then open in CS. Every time I get the message that it is not a compatible medium. I can't go through "my computer" because I am on a Mac and not a PC. If it makes a difference I have a call into Canon because my computer won't recognize my camera either. I can however open files through the card reader. I can also open the raw images in Canon's software. I was just trying to get CS to do it and it won't. |

Which version of the RAW plugin do you have? 2.2? I found the download page here. Is this what you've already tried?
The forums may help.

You need that new Camera RAW 2.2 version. And it needs to be placed in /Applications/(I have a Pictures folder here)/Adobe Photoshop CS/Plug Ins/File Formats/(Camera RAW). Restart. edit: Just as the instructions say. LOL
Opening CS and the file folder (on CF or the Hard DIsk) should start bringing up the tn in the File Browser.
The Mac should just recognize the camera as an extra disk when you plug it in. Do you have the camera on Mass Storage (or related to that)? It should be.
If you have Image Capture turned on (I hate that, but then I do Mass Storage), and plug n the camera, it should pop up.
Have a CF reader...always faster of course.

I think if you upload your pics in your computer drive or read the card from a carad reader, CS should have no problem reading the .CRW file (this is the canon extension).
Good luck!

Yes I placed the plug-in where it said to and got rid of th old one like it said to.
When I use the card reader it does pop up. When I try to download from the camera, nothing pops up. The camera can not be found. The main reason I would like to plug the camera in is so that I can use Canon's capture software. I take many images at a time and if they go straight to the computer it is faster for me. Also, if I can get CS to read the raw files that will cut out hours of converting raw files before I even take them into CS. |

That is my main problem. CS will not recognize the raw files I try to upload. Even with the most current plug-in. I will probably just have to get in touch with Adobe. |

sounds like Apple and Adobe both need contacted. the .CRW should be recognized by CS, since that is what 300D, etc. use for RAW also. But, if your Mac isn't recognizing it (not sure why it shouldn't) if it is a USB connection.
You done the Software Update lately? Under the Apple?
You said it comes through the card reader? Why not use that to dl to hard disk and then use CS? If CS doesn't open it off the hard disk, they definitely need to be called. The card reader downloads much faster than the camera and then you can Batch process in CS, etc. I love it's Camera RAW. Works great! Especially batching.

Just wanted to post an update for any who care or that have tried to help me. I have solved the CS problem. Just a matter of making sure every thing was followed to a tee and redownloading. As for the problem with my camera not talking to my cumputer, Canon says send it in for a look:( It sounds like the firewire port on the camera is no good and was that way from the start. The slight upside is that they told me they try to have only 72 hours for turnaround. So I will send it in on Mon probably and will hopefully have it back by the end of the week.
I would also like to take the time to thank all of those who did offer help and suggestions.
Thanks again,
Nick |
