Okay, so I read that backlighting is a technique used when the subject is between the light source & the camera. For the challenge, the catch was to use this technique but make it so that the subject is not a silhouette.
How are folks voting on this? I have found quite a few that are wither not backlighting (light source clearly from the top or directly on either side) or the subject is completely dark.
I would like to vote fairly on this & not just with my narrow viewpoint.
Any thoughts out there on your voting process given this definition?
Thanks in advance!

Well Roost, I am just looking to see if I can see any detail in the front of the subject. If the detail is unsure or undefined, then to me, that is a silhouette. Hope that helps.

Seems like I was possibly voted down for this... even though half the object I photographed was black ... not much I can do to make it not black.

I read it the same way as you. I'm voting the silhouetted ones (even though technically sound) lower than the truly backlit ones where the subject is recognizable.

I'm being quite forgiving on the top lit and especially on the side lit where it is the back of the subject where the direct source of light is focused.

I'm not being so kind where the foreground flash overpowers the back lighting.

I'm going fairly low on those that created a silouhette, because the challenge did clearly state it should not do that! They are good pictures, but clearly did not meet the challenge for me. I am also siding against those that do have the side lighting or overhead lighting...but still keeping in mind those that used this type of lighting to spot light your backdrops. On the plus side...I don't think I have scored any of the previous challenges quite as highly as I have with Backlighting.

One phrase in the challenge description is "the use of backlighting to enhance the photo is key". Some front/top/side lighting is needed to prevent a silhouette, and I'll even accept the key light coming from the front. But the "meets the challenge" part of my vote will be based on how well backlighting is used to enhance the photo. (To me, that's not a yes/no determination but a range from 0 to 5.)

Oh...thank you for putting that out there too! That was the deciding factor for me when choosing my photo to submit. It was the reason I did not submit this one. It is backlit, but does the light really enhance the photo?

Well, I have been a LOT busier than I thought, but I have been checking in quite often to see how the challenges are doing. I haven't been able to get any good shots for a while, but I think I have a couple of good ideas for the mirror challenge, and maybe even the smoke challenge. But, I am still here.

LOL...at least you have one...heh. After looking at some of your latest stuff, I think there are PLENTY more ribbons for you to earn. I still have quite a ways to go.
