It looks like I might be getting a 20d in the near future. I also want a lens to shoot hockey games with and the sigma 70-200 2.8 is looking really good, but ive seen so many mixed reviews. some say that its an amazing lens, and others say its really really soft and they got a 'bad copy'. im wondering, if i order the lens from one of these two places, and i get a 'bad copy' can i just return it? how does it work? anyone have past experiences?

Not with a lens, no, but I did order a fairly expensive backpack from B&H that I did not like once I got it on my hands. I had to pay shipping to return it, but no hassles from customer service getting an RMA number to return it.

Make sure you check their respective return policies before purchasing, and be equally sure not to let your time allotment run out before requesting an RMA should you decide to return the item.

Note this lens got a very good rating at:

//www.photozone.de/2Equipment/easytxt.htm#Ztelel:

Sigma AF 2.8 70-200mm EX (HSM) 4.02 (5) = very-good

There's two other places I have read really good things about at //www.resellerratings.com:

//www.canogacamera.com
//www.buydig.com

I haven't bought at either yet. But read //www.resellerratings.com. Canoga, which isn't probably cheaper than B&H, gets OUTSTANDING user comments, and buydig.com, which is pretty cheap, gets very good comments. Would consider either of those.

I have had great luck with B&H - lots of things, especially bags, need to be examined first hand and you need to be able to test stuff to make sure it fits your needs. Never had a problem returning stuff to them. Of course, I always take extra care with any packaging if I am unsure about an item.

Not so crazy for Adorama; I have ordered things from them but they just aren't as nice to me as the B&H folks. And as far as I'm concerned, if they are getting my money, they HAVE to be nice!

Never had any experience with Buydig but check to be sure they don't have some stupid restocking fee.

Oh, another good source is Charlotte Camera (charlottecamera.com) - sometimes their prices are better than B&H, sometimes not. But they are always fantastic to deal and customer satisfaction is a big deal to them.

Good luck!

i think 5.6 might be a little slow for some of those hockey rinks.

anyvun else?

If you are at all concerned about the return policy (and I would be with any lens purchase), definitely stick with the top-rated stores. If you find it significantly cheaper, there is prolly a catch... and likely a big one. And do trust resellerratings.com, it is IMO the best ratings site there is.

If you read the reviews on resellerratings.com, Canoga is DE PLACE TO BUY.

Have you considered the F4 Canon 700-200MM L lens. It is an L lens, rated even higher than the sigma, and gets high marks also

Canon EF 4.0 70-200mm USM L 4.17 (3) = very-good

And get this, it sells for: $574.94 at Canoga

Or is F4 too slow? Is F2.8 versus F4 worth that much?

If he really wants to shoot indoor sports, 2.8 is barely enough. f/4 won't cut it.

Yep, get the 200mm f1.8 That lens should be fast enough. Set ya back about $2500-$3000 used. Can't buy them new, Canon stopped making all lenses that had lead or arsenic in the glass or coatings.

Read the reviews at Fred Miranda for the Canon EF 135mm f 2.0 L USM. It's not a zoom and it's a little more expensive but it's probably one of the best rated lenses made for the kind of shooting you're describing.

PhotoZone: 4.52 (5) outstanding
Photodo: 4.5
Fred M: 5.0/30
