Digital Rebel
Extra Battery
Extended (transferrable) warranty until Dec 2007
$1100 Canadian (shipping included)
According to the way Mastercard exchanges currency, this works out to $819 USD.
I was going to hold off buying a DSLR in hopes that the 10d or the rebel's retail prices would drop, but I can't imagine getting a much better deal than this...not to mention that at retail I would have to pay 15% sales tax on top...
What do you think?

it depends on who you are getting it from, if it is a good dealer then yes it is a good deal, if its some odd ball place, then be cautious

| Private seller...the extended warranty is with Future Shop (a fairly large electronics retail chain) and I have had other warranty issues with them which were taken care of in a reasonable manner (at least as reasonable as a big chain can be). |

oh, sounds like it is used, if so then I think the price may be about $50 to $75 USD too high or even more

Yeah, yeah, I know!
I just thought this was a really good deal...wasn't sure if it was worth passing up.
What do you guys think? You don't seem too excited, although I've been looking around and haven't seen anything like it (with that warranty).

Hmmm...with shipping this would bring the price to just above the other one...
I guess I considered the one I was buying 'better than new' because it was only nine months old but has 3+ years of warranty left whereas a new one would only have one year?
Also, the extra battery. I dunno... |

You can get batteries for really cheap on ebay, but how much has it been used in the 9 months? I think 9 months is quite a long time for a camera, and depends how well it's been looked after and used as to whether it's worth the price. I would say new is always a better bet.

Okay, Ben, good point...I'm going to ask how many shots have been taken with it. What's it called, "shutter sumthin's"?
Also, do you think retail prices are going to drop later this month?

Blemt works in B&H so you could ask her about dropping prices :) Shutter somethings, or exposures, I dunno :)
I'd just ask how many photos it's taken.

| I would say skip the "deals" and get yourself a new one at a reputable photo shop...either locally, or someplace online like B&H. It's not worth the few dollars extra savings, imo. With a major purchase like this, I would not even consider a used piece of equipment from a store you haven't dealt with before. I would only consider used from someone I knew personally and knew how the cam was treated. Save yourself the potential aggravation and get something new. |

Okay, sounds good...
By the way, what's with the voice of reason and the reminding me of prior commitments (i.e. top ten)...are you my wife, by any chance? :0)
Thanks for your advice, I might let this one go and try and stick to the top ten thing!

I hope not!
Not that you wouldn't make an excellent huband, I'm sure, but I just don't think I'm ready for the change :P

I see what you're saying...just to clarify, though: It was purchased by an individual from a store that I have bought most of my electronics stuff at in the past without much trouble.
So the warranty is transferrable and I'd feel pretty good about that part of it... |

I sold mine just in time then! Sold the whole kit [also originally from Futureshop without the extended warranty] for $1200CND a month ago. Oh and it never had an extra battery.
The cheapest you can get a new one in my neck of the woods is $1250 plus tax.

Well, another thing I would do would be to get a copy of that warranty, if you're still considering this purchase, and read the smnall print and see exactly what's covered...otherwise, you may not be getting exactly what you think you are. I would only consider a warranty from the manufacturer. |

Like I said, I've dealt with FutureShop many times before and I understand their warranty and I'm not worried about that aspect at all.
Being a big chain, they're very impersonal but they also empower their employees/managers to take care of stuff efficiently, especially for warranty. |

| I think your private seller deal is a good one. Unless you have reason to think the person hasn't taken care of it, I'd say go for it. You seem to have your mind set on a DSLR so go ahead and make yourself happy. You seem to be comfortable with the store that stands behind the warranty, it is transferable, you won't have to pay for shipping, you won't have to pay sales tax, and, best of all, you won't have to wait for it to arrive. You could spend a lot of time shopping and maybe save a few bucks, or maybe not. I say GO FOR IT! Buy it today and get on with the business of learning how to use it. And start thinking about what lenses you want to buy. |

Way to go, as if my slightly obsessive-compulsive nature doesn't haunt me enough, you had to go and throw me a curve, didn't you!
I'll have to sleep on it (or, more acurately, miss another night's sleep over it)...
By the way, I just looked at your portfolio and you are definately another one of those "doesn't have a ribbon but definately deserves one!" dpc members! |

Okay, I found out that about 400 pictures have been taken on the camera. Most pictures were taken indoors.
Geez, why is every decision I make have to be so difficult... |

Circuit City has Digital Rebel Kit for $899.99 and 10Ds for $1259.99. You would have to pay tax and shipping though.
I'm with Ben, I would always want the new item. Your bumper to bumper warranty will expire in only 3 months before the extended kicks in.
Even so, you have to make up your own mind. I'm sure you will do the right thing for you either way. What is right for one isn't always right for the other.
Good luck!
