Paul, why don't you trust PhotoZone? Photodo is good but it only goes up to 2000. ... Am I missing something?

Maybe it's ME that's missing something.. I was under the impression the lenses weren't scientifically tested like Photodo was? I thought it was just a user vote like FM, only on more aspects?

If it's scientific I'll be delighted to use PZ all the time - as you say, Photodo is getting quite dated now. :-(

digistoune,

I can only talk about my Sigma 28-70/2.8 EX because that's the only mid-range I own. It might give you an idea about mid-priced lenses though..

Generally I'd say the lens is a touch softer than the 50/1.8, probably slightly more distortion, but pretty similar in terms of focus. The slight softness and distortion are to be expected when comparing a zoom to a prime. The focus on the 50/1.8 isn't wonderful, I find..

From reading what's at the top of this page AF SLR LENS TEST GUIDE I'm guessing that PhotoZone's ratings are more than user reviews, but not sure what the "External Sources" are. Also, for the older lenses, there is at least some rough parallel with photodo's evaluations.

What do people think about Canon's new EF-S 17-85 IS USM that is being sold as a kit lens with the 20D? Five hundred bucks is a lot to pay for an as yet unrated and unreviewed lens.
