hey all, I am taking some live band shots on the 10th and I'm told to use an f-stop of 4.0 or lower (or the lowest I've got). My lens only goes down to 5.6, will this be low enough? Does anyone have any other suggestions for me?

5.5 is still pretty wide, but if you're shooting in the dark that extra stop would make a difference. You could bump the ISO up to 320 or 400 without introducing too much noise (or clean much of it with NeatImage). Other than a powerful speedlight, your only substitute for aperture would be ISO.

Indoor concert will probably be too dark for 5.6.

Is there a D70 compatible lens that goes below 5.6?

Tons of them, if you're gonna be real close to the band the Nikon 50 mm F1.8would be the cheapest solution.

Sure is.. here's what I would get:

f1.4 is nice and fast fast and will give you a shallow DOF and better bokeh enabling you to nicely separating your subject from the background. I'm sure you will use it in many, many situations as well.

From what I've experienced, in professional concert lighting situations, a f5.6 at iso 200 or iso 400 should be fast enough. Also, the lights used in these situations can create some *awesome* shots with little work on the photographer's behalf. If you are doing this for a publication or something, certain places will rent out loaner equipment.

i would second this suggestion. the 50 1.8 is very inexpensive for such a sharp lense, and will do well indoors. you'll still need to bump your ISO up or use a flash tho, if the venue is dark.

But don't use a flash without asking first! They will probably not allow it, but you can ask anyway. But you can try pushing the ISO to 800 or even 1600 if necessary, the D70 will still give you decent pictures (depending on what you're planning to do with them).

Regarding the 1.4/50: You probably won't use 1.4 often, because the DOF is just too shallow. So I'd rather get the cheaper 1.8/50 or some other decent lens - you could also try to rent a 2.8/180 (or another fast lens, for that matter) from a dealer if you're going to be far away from the action.
