I bought a used (4 months old) Canon 28-135 IS USM from Simon's in Montreal. Over the weekend, I discovered that it does not focus properly at the wide side of the zoom (28-75 ish). Semms to front focus badly. The store has offered to refund me or send it in to Canon for repair. Would take about 7-10 days.
What should I do? I got a fair deal on the lens (Can$ 200 discount). Is it likely to be properly repaired? Should I just spend the $200 and get a new one?
Has anybody experienced anything similar? I'd love to know if Canon fixed the problem. Is it likely to reoccur?
Thanks, in advance.

If they can get it turned around from Canon in 7-10 days, that's fantastic. You would want assurances that if it should come back & still not be right, you could get the refund. If it comes back & is right, I'd say there's a very good chance it will stay fixed.

Hey: I would go for the repair. They are pretty good with lens. Ir is their pride. |

Here is a photo taken with this "defect lens" at 135mm (ISO 100, f/6, 1/300s), 100% crop, unprocessed.
After I saw this image, I decided to send it in for repair and hope for the best. The store said they would refund me if I was still unhappy after the repair. If I still want the same lens, but new, they will try to give me it close to cost.
Here's a question? If I decide not to keep it, and don't want to put the extra bucks for a new one, what other lens would you recommend?
Here are the ones I'm considering as options:
1. Sigma 18-125
2. Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 EX
3. Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 Xi...
I'd love some feedback on these as alternatives. Thanks.

Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 EX. Although the Canon 24-70 f/2.8L is is better but more than twice the price.

They are having you send just the lens? That seems unusual. Usually in a case of focusing error they want you to send the lens and the body. |

Don't want to be a jerk, but what's wrong with your crop? Without sharpening, it looks to be pretty crisp for a 28-135 @ 135 f/6.

The lens focuses perfectly above 75ish. All my other lenses work fine throughout. They never even suggested sending the camera in as well. If they had, I would have said FORGET IT! It's one thing being without a lens for 10 days, but my camera too!? No way. I'd have made my mind up not to keep the used lens.

You're perfectly correct. That image made me want to KEEP the lens, so therefore I wanted it to work properly throughout the 28-135 range. The image front focused very badly around 28-75. I could actually see it in the viewfinder. If I used the FTM focus to adjust, then I got a sharp image. I just want the camera to focus properly all by itself.

Another thought, I'm not sure if you have sent the lens yet but the 7-10 day figure is after it enters Canon's support system. You'll have to add in shipping to Canon, back from Canon, and sometimes an extra day for them to put it into their system. Parts shouldn't be required but if any are all bets are off as to when you can expect the camera back. Last time I sent a camera in to Canon repair they had it over a month. |

That's why I never would have kept the lens if I had to send the camera in as well. I'd have bought the new lens instead.
