My first ever shot of someone I don't even know...
I got on the train to come home last night. This guy sat down in front of me and just talked and talked. I finally got up the courage to ask if he'd let me take his picture. I was dumbfounded when he said yes!
So anyway, every time I'd lift my camera up to my eye this guy freezes. I can't get him to relax in front of the camera! I tried coaxing him to no avail. I finally told him to just keep right on talking (he'd had enough practice at that!) and then I got a couple of good shots.
Anyway, it was an interesting learning experience... see what you think of the picture.

| I'd possibly clone out the white triangle in the top left and whatever is growing out of his head but it's a good shot. Is that a lens blur filter or gaussian blur or is the dof from the camera? If camera, which lens? I dont have any experience with human portraits, but it looks good to me with good texture, lighting, and dof. And a very brave move if you're not use to shooting like that! |

If I look real hard for something "wrong" with it I'd say that tiny light spot in the upper-left corner could go. Otherwise you have a huge tonal range, effectively shallow DOF, good detail, and an emotive subject -- what's not to like? : )
Congratulations for trying something new!
Were you moving or at a stop when you took this? |

The blur is a little of both... I used the Canon 50mm at f/2.2, but then I also softened the picture in PS. I agree about needing to take the triangle out. What's behind him is a couple of windows (left and right) with some reflection of other people down on the bottom left.
As for brave... YEAH! The only way I talked myself into it was knowing that my stop was coming up and I was running out of time. I finally asked, and then we had just a couple of stops to go. I had to take the picture at a stop to avoid camera shake...
