Received my copy of SP2 yesturday (am on dialup so downloading would take too long) was wondering.......have any of you had problems with it, can I run it with PCCillen antivirus/firewall software or will I need to disable one of the firewalls. Currently have XP firewall and the PCCillen one with no probs. Is it worth installing the service pack or are there too many probs associated with it. My computer is just a home pc, used mainly for photo editing and the net.

Have Spybot and Ad-Aware and of course all the photo editing software.

thanks

I for one am not installing SP2 at this time. I spoke at length with my IT folks, whom I trust, and they advised me to wait.

Downloading now. I'll let you know how it goes. Hope for the best :)

I haven't installed SP1 & will not be installing SP2. I patch on a case by case basis. Most of the services in XP that are exploitable are shut off on our computer. I use Firefox for a web browser & Thunderbird for email. My wife & kids use some other email client, not outlook or Outlook express. A friend who is the director of IT at an insurance company said they have no plans to install sp2 due to conflicts with many of their applications.

Make sure you set up a restore point prior to installation. If anything goes wrong, like your firewall won't work anymore, you can restore.

Thanks for this thread!!! I have held off since I got the notification. I will anxiously await the results of your tests, bmatt17!!!! My husband who works for Hp was told not to download it because it would interfere with their stuff, but I wasn't worried about home use until I read the info on MS' site. There are too many variables. I just hope I can continue to get normal patches.

Quick and painless. So far anyway. It put MSN messenger back on though. That kinda irks me. It's a pain in the arse to get rid of. Installing this in a business environment is quite different than for your average home user. IT doesn't want to work out any kinks on 100+ PC's, 1 PC at home isn't hard provided you know what you're doing. My VPN into work was the only thing I was concerned about, and it works fine still.

Oh and Zone alarm still works. My PC is custom built, so if you have a HP or Compaq, you should probably check there site to see what they say.

I've been on SP2 for weeks, no issues with anything I run. I like the enhancements to IE and the addition of Firewall features. It's worth it IMHO. I say upgrade soon if you haven't already. The popup blocker alone is worth it. :)

I installed it and all of my past received votes immediately changed to 10s. :)

Been running it for two weeks. The pop up blocker works well and the wireless networking is better.

I installed SP2 a while ago, no issues to speak of.

Don't worry too much about the IT guys at work some place saying to wait, they have a much different view of the technology than the average home user does. If there was anything about SP2 that I found even slightly annoying, it was the handholding it does for the average home user -- I don't need it, but once clicked past it does not come up again.

Thanks for all your replies.............I'm still confused, but more enlightened.....I think LOL!

Trouble is if there are any issues that do arise I don't have the resources (or know how) to deal with them........though I know way more than I did this time last yr! What's really scary is that at work I've got the most computer experience......and I know nothing!!!!

I'n running Windows XP SP2 for 2 weeks now, no problems with it. Only some anti virus programs are not recognised by the new 'Windows security centre'. Just set it so you monitor it yourself.

I am an IT guy... and I am not installing it on the 100 odd pc's I look after, however I put it on my laptop and it is currently running fine.. it is a bit slower but it has some good popup blocking and hasn't crashed on me yet.

If you have any problems if you do install it, let me know, I can help.

I read warnings about some older software being incompatible.

some FTP and the like..

wouldn't hurt to wait... just in case.. but most issues can be fixed.

Had SP2 on my comp since it was Beta. Works great with Avast antivirus, I'm using the default XP firewall.

If you are worried about it, take a wait and see attitude. After all, if you don't install it your system will stay the same as it is now, and if you do not have any issues with it now ... well, you don't have any issues with it, so there is no harm in not installing SP2.

From what I have read, SP2 is mainly a security upgrade, some of which requires hardware to support it. If you are currently running a firewall, antivirus and are not having issues with your current programs there is no real compelling reason to upgrade.

Most of what it adds is to safeguard the rest of the internet from the home users that are not firewalled and are not running an antivirus program, and are therefore being taken over by the less than upfront individuals on the internet. These individuals (the home users, not the hackers or virus writers) are a threat to have on the internet, so MS is taking care of that threat by enabling basic protective measures. These measures are not as good as 3rd party utilities, but they are better than nothing.

That you are taking the time to find out means you are not one of these uninformed home users. :D

I am an IT guy, I've installed it on my own PC and laptop and some of the other guys in the office have installed it too.

General consensus is that it slows things down a little, but nothing too much to notice to be honest.

There is a lot of help out there for people that are having problems, if you are unsure about computers etc, I'd wait till Microsoft acknowledge the main problems and fix them.

There's going to be loads of people shouting about how bad the update is, but not as many saying it is good. People like to slate Microsoft, done it myself too!

There's a list of known issues here.

If you are going to try it, make sure you have a backup of your important stuff, make sure your recovery disks / retsore points sorted.

For those IT guys out there, the networked version of SP2 is very different than the single user version which should not be installed on networked pcs (I believe you can install the netwok version on a stand aalone pc though).

I'd suggest peeps install it, I've had no problems and it will automatically create a restore point (just remember the date).

It is the single user one I've got installed, not the network one.

Still no problems here...
