My question is about extended warranty. Around 160$ for 4 years (instead of one). I never buy those kind of warranties. I will buy a Rebel in 2 hours or so.
What would you experienced people recommend me about buying or not this warranty?

if it covers you doing something really retarted like dropping the rebel down the stairs, then i would say its worth it, but i dont know if $160 is a normal price for that kind of warranty.

Yeah, that sounds a little pricey to me for an ext. warranty. |

Extended warranties are a rip-off. They cover basically *NOTHING* except workmanship, and to tell you the truth, if workmanship is shoddy in the first place, it'll fall apart or you'll notice it *long* before the original warranty.
They only way to protect something like a camera from dropping it, or soaking it in water.. or general abuse, is to purchase insurance on it.
Don't give money to the man! Save it for the extra lenses/flashes/lighting/et al for the Rebel that you know you're going to want :)

Yeah, skip it. You're basically doubling their profit on the sale of the camera. These warranties are almost never a good idea. The few I've heard of that *are* worth it are the ones which are "no questions asked" and provide a new unit (rather than repair the broken one). Read the fine print, regardless. |

It did hit me a while ago... that's probably the major reason why I go to DSLR :) |

I agree with TechnoShroom; I would pass. The companies that offer those warranties pay out less than 5¢ on the dollar overall, so that should tell you what they are worth. Yes, there is some benefit in mitigating your risk, but not $160 worth.
Mack offers a 3-year extended warranty for the DRebel for $30. That, IMO, is a decent value. |

Inkley's offers an extended warrantee, but it's $160 for *one* year, not three. According to them, you could drop your camera in the bathtub and they would cover it.
The thing I would worry about ... is that some people have said that after about 10,000 photos, some people have had shutter problems and had to send their rebel in for repair. I'm personally up to about 8600 now (after about 5 months of taking pictures). So I haven't seen it happen yet ... but I do have the extended warantee, just in case.

Do you plan to hammer the camera in terms of use? If so, it might be worth it. Otherwise, probably not.
It's the case of people who have issues shout the loudest - DPReview forums show the people that complain, not the happy customers.
For me, my 300D needed to go back to Canon within 8 months because I took 11500 in a fairly short period and use my camera in a reasonably professional manner. In that respect, I'm glad I got my extra warranty, because I DO expect to use it. 4 years is a LONG time though. I went for 1 extra year; I wouldn't go over that.

There are all types of nuts in that basket. They scream at you if you like the camera and again even louder if you don't. It's only gotten worse over the last couple of years. |

Save your money. In a few months you'll be able to buy a Rebel for $160.

Depends on the warrenty. Best Buy, CompUSA and so on are true warrenty extensions. They only cover parts and labor. Many camera shops actually carry a variation on damage protection. Look at what they cover. If they cover impact damage, water damage, and are no fault (in other words they don't care who did the damage) it's a good deal. Repairs on digital cameras are beastly expensive. I'd suggest no more than 3 years. Probably 2.
Also ask what their terms are for replacing your camera if it's damaged.
If you don't do an instore plan, call your local insurer and get a personal articles policy on your gear. You should not walk around with an uninsured DSLR. It's just asking for trouble.

Can't say much for Best Buy's extended warranty on cameras (because I've never checked into it), but I bought it for a portable printer that I use for onsite sales (mainly because I use it at the motocross track where chances of it dropping or getting hit by dust are really high). I brought it in a few weeks ago because the magenta printhead wasn't working and they just gave me a whole new printer on the spot.
