Okay, here's a tricky one. Photos must be taken during the week of the challenge - so this week's "On the Road" submissions need EXIF data that shows they were taken by 6/9. How about us folks on the other side of the world, though? Sunday midnight EST is noon on monday here. Can I take my pic on monday morning (6/10), or do I get 12 fewer hours to make my image than the lucky sons on the east coast of the US?

Your picture can be taken at any time between when the challenge begins and when the challenge ends.

but if I enter 6/10/2002 in the 'date taken' field, I'll be automatically DQed. Guess I should fudge that.

Could folks set their camera''s date and time (if available setting) to Eastern time? Then the EXIF data will correspond to the challenge period.

It seems unfair to demand that users in other time zones conform to EST/EDT in their camera settings. It seems a better solution would be to either have the user set their time zone on the site, or adjust the error-checking code to allow for one day before and after.

The photographer's time zone is available in a roundabout way from the photgrapher's location (listed in profile). Two problems I see with this: the need to add more complexity to the site (coding-wise), and it makes no allowances for folks who take trips and photos) across time zones.

Mostly, I think we're on the honor system -- I haven't heard of too many photos being challenged on the basis of date-taken. Until cameras have the date/time function permanently embedded in ROM (along with a "lifetime" power supply), there's not much we can do to keep someone from cheating if they really want to anyway, and I'd rather worry about the quality of their photos than the date.

Folks, as long as a photo is:
a) submitted before the deadline, and
b) not showing in EXIF data as having been taken *before* the start of the challenge
... there should be no problem accepting it for the challenge.

Exactly.

And we might add a timezone feature in the future, but that might be more trouble than it's worth :)

In theory, a user west of EST/EDT could submit a photo with EXIF data before the challenge starts and still be legit. For a user in California, the new challenge goes up at 9PM Sunday; for one in Hawaii, 7PM in the winter and 6PM in the summer.

I don't think it's a big problem. If a contest runs from the 10th through the 17th, then you could be legal somewhere in the world if the EXIF date was in the 9th through the 18th range. The only way you could cheat is to take a bunch of photos with future dates in the hopes that the dates you picked matched one of the two challenges near the EXIF date.

If the date of your photo makes it out of date for a challenge due to time zone differences, then I would enter the date of the photo is Eastern Standard (or Daylight) Time in order to avoid being auto-rejected.
