Wow... 11th place!!! Thank you everyone for all of your very supportive comments.
My thanks especially go out to mhoogendyk, whose not only enjoyed the photo, but gave my daughter an ego boost as well.
And also to menardmam who, if only for a fleeting moment, was impressed enough to wonder if my photo might have been Heida's work. (what an honor! and even more so because she left a comment too)

This isn't one of those "which would have done better" messages ... because my second photo wouldn't have been allowed under Basic Editing rules. I loved it so much that I have to share:
Original: Advanced Editing:
And here's one that I loved, but just didn't feel that it fit the theme properly:

*I* would like to say thank you to the two people that gave me a 10! .. I never would have given me a 10.. or even a 9.. but dang.. you must have seen *somethin*.
I finished in 208th out of 288.. so, yay! I finished only 3 below one of my favorite images too!

156th and proud of it... LOL
Thanks to the few who gave me comments, I appreciate them.
Speaking of those comments, the few I got talked about a different crop...
Would this be better?

I think I like the original a bit better, or maybe something in-between in coloring would work ... I think the flowers need the additional saturation. But the composition is great ... I think you were right about your choice of images for this particular challenge -- her expression in the second one seems to me to be more "He better ..." than "I hope ..." |

Dang ... I just saw that my entry got 7 tens! That's way more than any of my other top-scoring photos ... and (of course) it was a completely unplanned submission. I got back from (an offline) vacation the day of the deadline with no idea of the challenge topic -- just happened to have a shot that seemed to fit ... : )
This was my alternate (thematically), but I wanted to use some Perspective correction to straighten the towers and cranes, so it wasn't eligible within the Basic rules.

Thanks everyone ......over the moon 6.528 and in the top 10! :) :) :)
I really appreciate the help, support.....and all the wonderful comments! This was a subject very dear to my heart, would ultimately like to be able to take images as a part of an awareness campaign for the SPCA.......what I'm learning here is giving me the knowledge, the tools to be able to achieve this.

Hey, #207 and proud of it! For those few people who wanted to see the color version of my shot, you'll notice that it isn't much better. I think the B&W improved it much...

MAN.. I was 208.. I can't believe your little rays of light beat out my cute little baby running into her sister's arms.
I'd say people have it in for kids.. but BradP's blue ribbon entry kinda messes up *that* theory

Suemack, your second outtake is even better than the pic you entered IMO. Very expressive. |

I completely agree, I love those outtakes...
If you had entered the first outtake, I would have easily given it an 8 (and I only gave out one 8 for the Hope Challenge). I've added it to my favorites and it certainly would have been my choice for winning photograph in this challenge as it really, truly conveys a sense of hope in the eyes of that dog.
Beautiful work!
Edit: I should mention that I like the picture you submitted as well...
