Could someone please explain to me how to obtain a model release from a subject where no money or consideration takes place. In other words, If your subject isn't being paid, and they don't want a copy of the photo, but you need their release to use the photo, how do you word the release?

Same as for your regular release I would imagine. Just put the word 'waived' in the place you would normally write what consideration was agreed to and have them initial it as well as sign.

Of course, you could always word it to not say specifically what consideeration is being given, such as 'for considerations received', and just leave it at that. The consideration could be as simple as your saying 'thank you' for them signing the release. I don't believe it has to be specifically mentioned though.

The second option is likely the best, but wait for further opinions, or if it is really important, go see a lawyer.

I have seen where $1 is used, even though no money really changes hands.

Is this model like a friend or something? Just have them sign something stating... The photo shoot was free of cost to the model in exchange for the rights to all pictures and releases of the photos of said model taken. I dunno, if you spell it out you can't go wrong. Course i'm no lawyer :-)

Several useful photography forms are available here, including several modeling releases (including one for minors).

Model releases are just that - releases. As much as anyone tries to turn them into a contract, they are not quite the same thing. They do not require consideration or bargained for exchange. They aren't quite quit-claim deeds, but similar. You do not need the $1 dollar exchange - 1 dollar is not consideration in American contract law since like 1850 or something.
