I have never seen a spider like this. Its abdomen was about as big around as a dime (3/4"), and about half that in thickness. It kept its head under its body except when moving.



Sorry about the poor image quality. My wife came in wanting me to kill this thing that was hanging outside one of our windows. The wind was blowing the web and I only had one flashlight to light it with (slow shutter). I was lucky she let me take the few shots I did, and was not about to ask if I could bring it in for more light.

Anyway, does anyone know what kind of spider it is?

looks similar to something we get here called a golden orb spider

I think this one is common and harmless. But this was as close as I wanted to get.

Yeah! Spider's are neat, I shoot them when ever I get the chance.

we have those at my mother's house

I shoot them everytime i see them...i shoot them with the bottem of my shoes!

I HATE spiders!

Thanks.

I agree after looking over Missouri's spiders that it is likely one of the many species of Orb spiders. Which one? To tell you the truth I wasn't able to see it well enough to tell, even looking at the images available online. But the one thing they all have in common is that they are 'mostly harmless'.
