I really enjoy frumoaznicul's people pictures, so I'm trying to work on doing more street photography of people. Lots of opportunities for pictures of Babushkas here in Minsk. Here's my version of one of his:

Here's his original:

My problem is I can't seem to get the black blacks and super contrast that he has in his picture. Tips please on what I need to do...

Those pictures are beautiful, as are the people...I asked this in the frumoaznicul thread earlier, but didn't get a response:

How do you go about taking these pictures? Do you ask first? Do you get to know the person by starting a conversation, then taking a photograph? Do you sneak up on them?

Many thanks for your help, very nice pic!

Was about to ask exactly the same thing.

Very good shot Mike,
I don't think you have quite got the tones as good as Cristi but you are certainly getting there.

First thing I notice is that the lighting in your shot, skief, is too harsh. The crisp shadows falling on her left cheek, while accentuating her age, do not flatter her demeanor.

Also, I would love to see more light in her eyes. If you look at froo.mow.az.nickel's shot, you'll see that you can make out the white's in her eyes better and there is a subtle wash of catch light as well.

Her pose and expression is very nice, though, and you're definitely onto something.

In this shot, I was outside a cathedral here in Minsk. There are many Babushkas begging for money from people. I had stopped to talk to this one. As I was talking, I had my Optio S4 mounted on a monopod, sort of to the side. I could see out of the corner of my eye the composition (wasn't the best, needed to get closer (the pic is a major crop)). I was keeping eye contact with her, and taking pics with the hand holding the monopod. Seemed to work ok, I don't think she realized I was taking them. Only problem with this is getting them to sign a model release afterwards :-)

I'm trying to get bolder in asking people to take their pictures, but it seems most times when I do, they start laughing and shaking their head no...no....no.... Oh well, have to learn the technique.
