I just ordered my Canon 580ex, which is on back order til October, from Adorama. However, I know almost nothing about external flashes other than they are more accurate and just all around 'better'.
Can any of you tell me more about how good this flash is/may be and how it will work with my Canon 10D (not specifics, just benefits and theory).
Also, what is E-TTL II? Adorama says "E-TTL II utilizes subject distance and other information that automatically modifies flash power, resulting in accurate flash exposure regardless of subject size, reflectance, or photographic composition." Is that in my camera or in my lenses?
Help!!!!

TTL = Through The Lens as far as i know.
E = i am assuming means Electronic.
II = some R&D folks came up with a better way to do something already put in production.
someone will correct my mistakes i am sure.
sounds like that flash does everything but point at something for you ;}

Another good resource is Canon's FlashWork Brochure. But NK Guy's EOS flash "tome" is the definitive source for info on Canon flash photography. =]
(Note that E-TTL II is a feature of the camera body, and not the flash.)

I have the Elan EOS IIe and the EOS 10D... I must have E-TTL according to that write up, but what about E-TTL II? Is that only in the 20D or does the 10D have that? I just want to see how this 580ex will benefit me with my 10D since i can't afford the 20D...

The 10D is E-TTL only, not E-TTL II. That's why in this thread I was questioning the extra cost (based on Canon's estimated selling price) of going with the 580EX over the 550EX if you had an older body. |

My husband is trying to find a way to make some extra money on ebay so I can buy the 20D... so having the upgraded flash, JUST in Case, may be helpful... it's not like I won't upgrade in the future, even if I can't get the 20D now... :)
By the way, thank you all for your replies!!!

I use a Canon EOS Elan II and also recently obtained a flash attachment. I located this information to help me in my quest to learn how to operate it. It has a lot of helpful information.
