I want to revamp m webpage to be user friendly and on the fly adjustable like DPChallenge. This is Javascript/DHTML, right?
The question is, what are the best resources. I have heard WebMonkey many times and dived in a little. Anyone have good book suggestions, software, etc.? By the way...Mac. Thanks

DPC is mostly (if not totally?) coded in php. I find the best way to learn it is to pester someone who already knows stuff to help you with it :P

True, I see a lot of server-side PHP here, but looking at the source I also noted a lot of client-side Javascript and DHTML, CSS, etc.
dacrazyrn, I certainly agree with Konador, learning from someone that already has the experience works best for me too. But first, I would recommend designing your site. What do you want it to look like, what do you want it to do, etc?
Once you have that you know what help to ask for. If you require design ideas I suggest looking at www.coolhomepages.com.
Are there specific areas of functionality you like about DPC?
It certainly is one of the best built sites I have seen. |

The look and feel of the site is mostly controlled via the CSS settings, which cover the colours and so on, with the JavaScript used primarily for the top menubar (AFAICT) and a few form functions. There are several guides on using CSS on the web, and you can get most JS utilities for free as well, if you look around.
As for dynamic content, then odds are you'll want to use something like PHP or ASP or Perl at the front end, and have a database (eg MySQL, MS-SQL) behind to store the data. You'll need to have a rough idea how to program in order to get the best out of these languages, and advice from a pro would really help.

Thanks
the biggest thing that interests me is being able to load up pics and have them show up in specified categories, and the like (recent added, faves, etc) My server (1and1) has the MySQL and PHP capabilities. Now I will have to learn how to use them.
I use gallery for my family photos, and looked at the code to see how easy it would be to modify some (appearance wise, my logo, etc.), but got confused with it. SO....I got some learnins to do.

i would consider getting a real good grasp of database design before actually designing the new site - it's one of those things you want to get right the 1st time - as its a pain to redo it.

I don't want to discourage you, but have you looked into the hundreds of portfolio scripts currently available?
First make a list of everything you want the script to be able to do -- list everything, then prioritize. Then post your list, and in all likelihood someone will know of one that fits your needs.
If you really want to get your hands dirty, looking at a full-blown application level script is (as you found out) just going to confuse you. Instead, look into the developement communities (SourceForge comes to mind, but there are others) and find a project that comes close to meeting your needs. Get in touch with the developers (usually have some form of a forum) and get involved. Some projects are more active than others, so that will need to be taken into consideration, but you could end up with a direct line to the developers to help you get their project customized to your needs.

Actually, Tracy said that he is already using Gallery on his web page.
Personally, I would highly recommend sticking with that, as you will be much further ahead of the game than trying to "re-invent the wheel".
Customizing Gallery is quite easy; you just modify the "wrappers" for each part of the Gallery that are located in the "html_wrap" directory.

I noticed, but he didn't mention which 'Gallery' he was using, and in a quick search I found several that go by that name and many others that could be shortened to it. So, without specifics I kept to general comments.

My big concern, mainly is trying to learn enough of how to code, etc., so that I can make small tweaks and jimmys to the site. I love the way here, that you can upload a shot and see it instantly (through database, I am guessing) and also the password part. Love to have that for the future customers for portraiture, (and hopefully) modeling to be able to go there personally and pick and choose. I use one of the PS Web Galleries I modified a bit for this now. I just really love how this site here works and want to emulate it in ways, because it is so friendly. I have not dove into the specifics on EXACTLY what I want. I thought if I read a little on how to then I could decide what I am capable of and what IS possible.
I do use the aforementioned Gallery (1.4.3 I think) and may just dive into that further. Question on that one...Do you have to upload/run a different "program" aside from the one I am running now? Especially since for my regular and not family website, it will be totally different?
I have been jotting down things here and there on like and don't like.
Is Dreamweaver, etc. able to do this kind of work? Not going to go out and fork out tons of cash to find out I am limited in it somehow.

Gallery will allow you to define user ID's and restrict viewing of certain albums to only those who you permit in the "Permissions" screen. Your customers would then have to click the [login] link to see their private album.
Not sure what you mean about uploading and seeing a shot instantly; Gallery works the same way, and when you have a lot of shots to upload the Java app "Gallery Remote" works great for uploading photos quickly and easily.
There are also extensions that people have written for Gallery that allow a "shopping cart", and then for the order to be paid for via PayPal.
