What time of the day was it taken?

It was early morning on an overcast day. I do find that reds are super saturated under those conditions. I probably should have toned it down a bit, but I took it on the way into work one morning and had to hurry and send it out to some friends to show that I finally *got* one. :-)

Just goes to show you do not need nectar feeders :)
You can always use plants.

I have a Fire Bush and several other plants that they just love and hang around all the time. But I also have 4 nectar feeders out.

I also wanted to get a few good shots this year b4 the birds passed on. I don't have a feeder so I sat at my Grandmothers house for 2 hours until I got these 2 photos :) Hope to get more and better ones next year.

Real nice shots!

Here is a tip for those having trouble with ANTS! Rub a small amount of Vaseline around the base of the pole supporting the feeder or etc and the ants will not cross it. You may have to redo it after awhile but it works and keeps them from polluting the nectar!

Also you will notice in this shot I switched to feeders with bee guards on them. They are not 100% effective but they work better than the first type I had. The bees were also polluting the nectar.

There is a brand of feeder called HummZinger that is suppose to be bee proof and have an ant moat but they are somewhat pricey.

Hi, I'm happy that you like these shots. For all the shots, the shutter speed was 1/1000 sec, which is the maximum that my camera can do. ISO was either 800 or 400.

Spent a couple of hours at my feeder this summer to get these. Set manual focus to range just in front of feeder and shutter to 1/1000 sec. Bright sunny day.

Crop the feeder out of this one and it seems to tell a very different story!

Great pictures, thanks for sharing!

Anybody now what kind of Hummingbird this is???!! Caught him at my feeder this morning taking a drink. Sorry about the poor quality of the picture. Had to take it at a distance and through glass.

One problem I have is that the orioles also like the nectar and they break the flowers off the feeders so that they can get at the nectar also.

i've heard that - but haven't seen any of them. though i would like to.
didnt know they would actually break the feeders - do they break the flowers in the garden'?

i dont think they come this far north

They must soup last I checked Ottawa was north of Vermont, not nearly as pretty though.I don`t think they break flowers in the garden but they have to on the hummer feeders as their beaks are way to large to fit in otherwise!
