Hey ya'll! Is it just me or is PSCS slow as Christmas sometimes? Especially when you're working on a large file (because you want to make a large print).
Would more memory help?
Any tips that you can share that might speed things along just a wee bit?
(In case this is important, I'm running a Mac G5 with a paltry 512 megs of RAM) |

More ram might help, don't know about Mac, but on PC setting the scratch disc to a seperate drive helps too. |

No prob on my G5 with 2GB RAM, scratch disk on an external FireWire and the backup scratch disk on the puter.

CS is a real memory hog. You can adjust the amount of your memory that you wish to dedicate to PS (EDIT>PREFERENCES>IMAGE AND MEMORY CACHE)which will help. Also, if you have more then 1 hard drive, select the second drive as your scratch disk. But if you are working with large or 16 bit images, 512 is not enough.

So I'm finding out!
I read in another forum that you should allocate only 70% in the memory cache (at least on a Mac) and that to boost that number will actually produce less than optimal results. I do have an external FW drive - I'll try setting that as the 2nd scratch disk in the meantime. Anybody know of the best place to get good but reasonably priced RAM? (Oh joy! more $$$ to the ole photog habit!) |

LOL Don't complain, I'm running PSCS on my G3 500MHz laptop with 1 GB RAM AND 40 GB HD...not bad but kinda slow. I ordered the Dual 2.5GHz G5 with 1 GB RAM and 250 GB HD last week, should get it soon...can't wait! The Apple 20" LCD should make it a better experience too! Oh and OWC is pretty reasonable in RAM prices.

OWC? Dang it, I've seen that before... just can't remember what it stands for. Remind me?
Congrats on your new Mac - sounds like it's gonna be a sweet machine! I still love my G5 and I'm sure I'll love it more when I add some more RAM. I wanted to use it for a few months so I'd have a better idea of what I would need before I spent a whole bunch of moolah on an upfront upgrade, ya know? Shoulda known I wasn't gonna get away with 512 m's of memory!
OWC - never mind! It finally came to me!

My G5 has 1GB of RAM and I plan to get more (total RAM around 2-3GB). I usually have these apps open at any given time: Safari, InDesign CS, Photoshop CS, FontAgent Pro, Entourage and maybe Word and Excel.
Last time I bought RAM it came from Crucial. My current G5 came with extra RAM from Expercom. Mohawk memory is also good and same with newegg. I really like newegg since they are about 30 min from me so shipping is prompt (they do not have will call).
