I had a really hard time choosing my entry for the botany challenge, as plants are probably my all-time favourite things to photograph. The one I chose I thought would be relatively original and have somewhat broad appeal, but since it's probably not even going to finish over 5.0 (and still has zero comments), I'm starting to wonder about myself and my judgment. My tastes seem to be very different from the majority of the voters here; I also notice this when going over challenges that have finished - my own opinions about what's good and what's not so good usually aren't reflected very well. That said, I thought I would post a couple of outtakes to see the reactions they would have gotten.

Heart of Gold

This one was the one that I considered entering instead of my submission, because I really, really like it as well. I decided against it because I didn't want to do what would undoubtedly have been "yet another close up flower picture", and I figured it'd be too abstract for most voters to appreciate.

Tiny Beauties

This one was not one I really considered entering. While I like it okay, I just don't see it as creative - really, it's very middle of the road, very boring. It's ironic that this might very well have been the best scorer of the bunch, even though it's definitely my least favourite. It's pretty much straight from the camera, so I would likely have given it a bit more contrast and such before entering it. Either way, I guess I tend to like sensational things a bit too much.

Anyway, I'm curious how others view these. Is the more boring one the better? How would you have scored these or commented on them?

Heart of Gold is a very good shot and I probably would have given it at least a 6. I like its slightly abstract feel.

Nice, delicate light on the 'Tiny Beauties." The Heart of Gold is very interesting. I'd have given it a 7. The 'gold' part seems a little 'processed to me, otherwise it would get an 8 or perhaps a 9. Nice work!

I love flower pics, especially ones that get up close. But for some reason Heart of Gold just isn't doing it for me. Perhaps the red is just too strong. Perhaps the overall picture is just too abstract. I really find myself wondering what I'm looking at.

I probably would have voted Tiny Beauties higher. But that shot could be improved with just a bit of editing. Look at it in the histogram and you'll see an obvious first step.

By the way, I took a look at your portfolio and I gotta tell ya, I love Stormy Skies. Awesome photo, excellent example of interesting lighting.
