Is there a pattern with the month's free study challenges? The last three was placed every three months, Dec(winter), March(spring) and June(summer). If there is a pattern then a September Free Study challenge(fall) is coming up next month. At least I hope it will be in Sept if it's just coincident this pattern for the past year. I would even want to see it more often, maybe every two months or even each month.

I think the general ethos of 'surprise' challenges is not to anticipate them, otherwise, they won't happen.

I believe that they have instituted a free study every three months.

Maybe you're right, but does it have to be a "surprise" challenge, is there any benefits in that? just wondering :-)

Umm, yes. Otherwise, let's just say you happen to be on vacation in August and come across the most wonderful landscape shot. Knowing that a "free study" is coming up (because they are "predictable"), you just set the date in your camera to "September 2, 2004" and take the shot. You may not do that, but trust me, there are people that would. (The same ones who get caught manipulating EXIF data, for example.)

Personally, I like the "challenge" aspect of this site; there are plenty of other online photography competitions that accept photos (regardless of subject matter) on an on-going basis.

I've just read almost all in this thread and it looks like a lot of people vote for a monthly Free Study challenge, what are you waiting for admins? :-)
GeneralE came with the downsides in his opinion for monthly challenges, but I have to agree with the answers from kirbic to GeneralE's opinions. N.b. they're both in the SC.

Otherwise, the Free Study challenges are always good, so I say thanks to the admins!

If anyone is THAT determined to cheat they can set their camera date to September and take a shot, then change it October and take a shot and so on and cover the next few months. How likely is it?

Sometimes I worry that the SC's view of human nature is really skewed by their constant exposure to the cheating minority! ;-)

Anyone determined to cheat will do so whether it's a free study or not. With themed challenges it's just a case of shoehorning the image in to the theme or being that little bit luckier.

I think it would be really nice to have a free study every single month, then there would be no element of anyone even trying to cheat their dates because they wouldn't need to.

Then a monthly challenge would be the answer to this, right? :-)

I like this growing community here on DPC, and referring people to other sites with this will not help the growth of the site. Also the system here on DPC is the best IMO. The free study challenges are good addition, especially for the good photos that we get without having a challenge going on for it. Then there will also be not as many photos in the challenges that are "squeezed" into them.

I don't want to re-hash my opinion on this every time this comes up, but to me, a "continuous free study option" would change the dynamics of DPC. This site is based around the concept of "challenges". If there was always a free study to submit to, there are probably many people who would never bother to take pictures for the "Challenges", and instead would shoot whatever they want and just enter the free studies. There would be a chasm that formed between the "free studiers" (who would participate, vote, comment, etc. in primarily the "free study" contest), and those who want to continue to challenge their photographic and creative abilities by participating in challenges that make you "try new things" and expand your photographic horizons.

That's my opinion. I'm not against having an occasional "Free Study" as the "challenge" (kind of a misnomer since you can't photograph whatever you want), but I personally don't want to see DPC turned into YAPCS (Yet Another Photo Competition Site) where you can just submit whatever you want, whenever you want. DPC is "different", and I like it that way.

I'm not suggesting we scrap themed challenges in favour of a free study but I don't think adding more to the site detracts from the core concept and strength of it.

I mean, hey, suck it and see.

Eddy, you are right in the money with this.

The spontaneity of what comes up makes this site one to
keep you on your toes and keep the creative juices flowing.
Each time a new challenge comes up, the wheels go in motion
and mentally scamper to get creative.

Sometimes it's a "How in the world am I going to shoot that?".
Each time though, it is mentally stimulating and in my case,
gives me a reason to go out and about and "see" the world around
me in a different way.
Way too easy to become desensitized to our surroundings.
