This had been bugging me and I've wasted a few good shots because of it....

It seems to randomly default to "closest subject" mode. At first I thought it was when I changed lenses but I've tried that and all is OK. I lock mine on "center" and then,, woops... "closest subject" again. Is this an in camera bug?

Thanks!

Now this is interesting...

I've mentioned that I'd sometimes have trouble with autofocus when using the older model telephoto zoom lens. Mostly we couldn't find a reason but occasionally we'd see that the focus mode had changed.

We both thought I must have changed it myself by accident but now I'm wondering whether that was the case since I can't see how I'd have done that without noticing.

I think it changes when you change your shooting mode. There are default focus areas for different modes.

I shoot in A, S, or M mode all the time and never had had to reset my focusing mode. I have mine set to center and it's stayed there.

Maybe if you shoot in the different pre-programmed modes (i.e. portrait) is has a default focus setting for those modes.

edit: typo

Auto mode on the D70 is evil. It's set to default to closest area focus. I used it for about 24 hours and haven't used it since. P or A will allow you to set your focus area and won't change it on you.

Auto bad! :)

Although it's worth noting that it's not hard to knock the little four-way control on the back of the camera by accident and shift the focus point.

Yes there's a lock switch for it but that lock switch is also on the back where certain people (hard stare at Kavey) manage to switch it off by accident too :-)

*grin*

Yeah, generally not a good thing to say, "oooooh what does this button do?" while you are in the middle of trying to shoot. ;)

Haven't come across that problem yet, except...it did confound me when it got back from Nikon. They reset everything. Luckily it didn't reset the White Wedding curve I put in (since the stupid trial for Capture is over with). Does anyone else find this stooooopid? Can't load custom curves without the Capture software? I have been reading and heard there is someone out there working on something to do this though.
