Hmmm... I joined as a member and thought I would rush off a quick entry into a members challenge. I think maybe rushing was a big mistake. So I am getting an average score..

You live and learn...

It's funny, last week I went to White Flower Farm in Litchfield, CT, and they have all manner of wonderful flowers and plantlife; this last week, work adn nothing, so I have the typical 4.68888. I really just stink at photography I think.

Reading the thread makes me feel like a little kid with his nose pressed up against the window pane watching all his friends out playing while he`s confined to the house.
I was so looking forward to this challenge when I developed a chest cold which subsequently flared up my asthma..this, combined with the dismal weather in my part of the world, ensured there would be no participation from me this week.
However, I`ve had a quick squint at the thumbnails and I think I`m going to enjoy voting on this one....I will try to be kind to you all :)

Here, have a couple of strong swigs of this. Will make sure you give eveyone a 10.

I'm sinking fast.
Hope you are feeling better Gordon, maybe you could get on with an indoor nude shot :)

I think I read too much into the challenge .. I didn't think that a pretty picture of just a plant would cut it .. so I took a shot where "plant life" was more of the central theme. Ah well .. live and learn .. and have fun.

Good luck to all,
Mike

This one is doing quite well. If things act as they have for my past three entries, I could be looking at close to 5.5 by the end of this challenge. I am very pleased with the image I entered and looking at the other entries there isn't anything quite the same, although one comes close...

All in all I don't think it's half bad for taking the shot, driving some 6 hours home and spend roughly 30 minutes picking one, editing it and posting...

Right now, I am happy to have crested 5 for the first time... I hope that my image stays up there...

Thanks Denis.....I feel rejuvenated already....however, I think a bottle of Glenlivet would be a better bet for making sure that 10`s were handed out all round :)

Paul...I`m working on that one !!!!!

Man!!! How in the world can we even vote on these photos?! Almost every single one of them deserve a huge high score - There are some extremely talented people around here and I feel so stupid just going through here and giving all of these a 10 - are there any guidelines you all are using to help you besides the "does it fit the challenge" or is everyone as impressed as I am?
I am holding at a 6 with about 35 votes but no comments yet.

I am not very impressed to be honest.

I think it was a hard challenge..

Went out on a limb on this one;-)
Actually it's my first members challenge! I'm happy to see there are no images anything like mine as I like to try to keep it original.
Doing OK, but also only 1 comment after 39 votes, so obviously isn't knocking any sox off. Wobbling around 6.2, but it is early days!!

I'm happy! Thought it was going to be sub-6 for sure :)

Don't get too excited about your slightly higher scores. This challenge is gonna run hot. I'll be lucky to get a top-40 finish if I can keep this score.

Note to self: Must use more self control when trying to fight the urge to submit a sub-par picture. :)

OK. From the comments received I should not have converted to black & white. I agree.. I don't know what I was thinking of. :-)

I got hammered over lunch break!!
I started off at 6.0 for the first ten votes and then slid a bit, but was able to hold steady above 5.25. Left for lunch and now...

Me, too. I was at 6.48 at 8:00 AM, then 6.22 just before lunch, ...now I'm at 6.06. It would be nice to at least stay above 6.00 in the end.

I do hope to get some comments as to why mine is good/bad and what I might do to improve it more... Maybe a different DOF, perhaps a tighter capture... I don't know yet.

I am finding this difficult to vote. I am not 100% convinced I know what a good Botany shot would look like... I keep asking myself whether a photo of a flower is really meeting the challenge. I mean botany refers specifically to the scientific study of plants and flowers... so shots with magnifying glasses or microscopes can be considered as meeting the challenge. A photo of a flower, although it may be a nice picture may not convey the science part effectively

just above 5 heh :)

That's because you are only reading the name of the challenge or the first sentence of the challenge descriptor...

The whole challenge description is as follows:

"Botany is the science or study of plants. Capture a well-composed image that has plant life as its central theme."

It says to have plant life as the central theme. To many people, that would mean to have plants be the main central component of the image. Using both the 'science' aspect and the plant aspect of this challenge could possibly be a bonus, if you are so inclined, but the 'science' bit isn't the core of this challenge and doesn't have to be included.

Does anyone else agree or disagree with my summation here?
