I am going to get laughed at, but what the hey? I just bought a Canon Rebel, and it came with an 18-55 and an ultra compact kit lens for Canon.

So, I am in this store in Madison WI yesterday, and see a bunch of used lenses for sale. I say to the guy, "Which of these fits a Canon Rebel?" He says, "I know from squat about cameras." I go out to the car and bring in my camera and try them and all of them are ---- the threaded part that screws into the camera --- are too small.

So, how can one KNOW what is going to fit your camera without embarrassing yourself, or buying the wrong one on eBay?

I want to find a good used telephoto lens for her (why is my camera a her? no idea!), and cannot afford a new one, so am looking for a used one...

Don't laugh...just unveil the mystery of the lens mumbo jumbo to a novice! ;o)

EF lenses or EF-S lenses will fit the 300D :)

Check out this Canon site, tells you everything you want to know about their lenses. Check out this section in particular.

So, again, to sound like a total freshman, ANY lens that has an "EF" or "EF-S" printed on it will automatically fit my Canon Rebel? And only those? Or are there others to consider that may NOT have the "EF" or "EF-S" printed on them?

For example, I know where, on an auction board there is a

Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 75-300mm USM Lens mint
f/4.0-5.6 EF IS Image Stabilizer USM Autofocus Lens

for sale.

Is this a good lens? Will it fit my Rebel?

What is a good price for this particular lens?

Yes, any lens that is EF or EF-S will definatly fit the Rebel. You can also use Sigma lenses and other makes which are not canon. I'm not sure if they use the same EF markings but any EF will fit. I don't have the lens you mentioned so I can't comment on it, other than the fact that it will work with the camera :)
