In no way am I saying this is a nice photograph - it's just a snapshot. But, Hurricane Charley is quickly disintegrating its way up the Florida peninsula... This is one of the frontal squalls that got pushed ahead of the storm. Charley itself is due to hit us in an hour or two - but it's falling apart very, very quickly. I think this squall may prove more impressive than the heart of the storm itself by the time it hits us.
If the rain hadn't started pounding, I would've tried to do this more justice - this cloud line stretched from the eastern horizon to the western horizon, the whole system pushing north. I've been blogging this all day. So many unexpected turns!!!

Butterfly, I just worry about the folks in Port Charlotte. They got slammed. Everybody's been talking about landfall in Tampa... And sure enough, this monster packed a category 4 and split east into P. Charlotte. At this point, it's falling apart. Nothing to take too lightly, of course (random chaotic tornadic activity) - but I'm really worried about the Port Charlotte communities. They just got banged really hard. Or so it seems. We all hope for the best, I'm sure.
does anyone else feel this sickening kind of paradoxical guilt-glee about bad weather? It's remarkably sublime. On one hand, you get excited by the power and magic of the weather; on the other hand, you realize how it destroys lives and it makes you sick... I've never been able to come to terms with this. It just "is".

Just wanted to quickly wish you and yours safety tonight, Janson. I can hear the winds starting to really pick up around my house, so I'll be shutting down, myself. I'm afraid Charley isn't breaking up fast enough - he's supposed to hit here in Central Florida still packing winds of 80-90 mph and leave 4-9 inches of rain behind. The video coming out of Punta Gorda is scary, and I haven't even seen anything yet from Sanibel/Captiva - I fear that they really caught it, especially by the storm surge - most of the islands in that area don't have any "high" ground to speak of. I hope that y'all are in a safe place. Take care.
Ron

just out of curiosity, what were your settings on this shot (tv, av, iso)? thanks.
and good luck to everybody down there. we have a lot of family/friends all across the state, and it hasn't sounded like much fun.

Ron, I wish you and yours the same positive fortune. I'm thankful that the original storm-track didn't hold, as that would've been significantly worse for Sorrento - but, with every fortune there is an equal and opposite misfortune. As the rain continues to build up in my neck of the woods, I can only imagine what those south and to the west of me have already felt earlier this evening. And for what those to the southeast are currently enduring.
It would be an interesting challenge: photograph what a hurricane means. Unlike a tornado, there is no solid focal point available. It would have to be somewhat abstract and/or interpretive. Hurricanes remind me, personally, of giant tears. Incredibly massive, beautiful, and tragic tears.

Skip this was shot in Av mode with the kit lens f5.6, iso 250-auto,1/30 sec @18mm. It started to poor right after I took this shot so there were no more! A tornado did touch down about 20 miles away that night, very rare for Eastern Ontario. |

nice job; it looks pretty sharp for a handheld shot.
i'm struggling with getting the darker details out of the clouds while not losing the foreground. it makes it a challenge when you see a sky with potential, but to have to spend half your time bombing around the country side looking for a decent place to shoot it. |

Some heavy winds, a bit of rain... But as Bjork rants, "all is full of love".... A beautifully dark night, it was.
- good night to all the incredible sunsets that are to come -
- it's never enough
