It's true your writes speeds in-camera won't improve significantly, but with a USB 2.0 CF reader, a 40x card makes a huge difference when dumping your photos to disk. A faster hard disk also helps here.

I timed write times while at work today after shooting some product photos to both my Lexar 40x 512MB CF cards and to my Hitachi 4GB Microdrive. I will probably redo this test as one of the CF cards was mostly empty while the Microdrive had lots of data on it. Also, I'd guess I was just a bit slow hitting the stop button on my watch so the times might be off by about 0.1 or so seconds. These pictures were taken in full manual mode, RAW and on a tripod viewing the same object in case there were pixel differences to cause differences in file sizes. I took three photos of the same subject and then averaged the write times (all in seconds).

Hitachi Microdrive:
#1: 24.60
#2: 16.28
#3: 16.01
Average: 18.96

Lexar 40x 512MB CF:
#1: 9.07
#2: 9.33
#3: 9.40
Average: 9.27

It's interesting to see that the speeds for the Microdrive DECREASE while the speeds for the CF card INCREASE. I might have to take a larger number of shots (maybe ten) to get a better average. But even if the Microdrive was empty at the beginning of the shoot, what would cause the write times to decrease and increase respectively?

PS: I forgot something. I forgot to mention how I timed these write speeds. I hit the start button when the shutter released and I stopped the timing when the red access light turned off.
