Any ideas why?

I was fairly proud of my first real "home studio" effort. I used a textured piece of material as the backdrop & played with angles & a REALLY FRIGGIN HOT LIGHT..lol I took many pics till I got something I liked. I thought picking up on the texture of the material added a softness as opposed to a solid, stark white backgound. With 4 very ++ comments, I'd love to have some ideas of why it didn't even make it to 5. Is it just boring?

I gave you a 5 because you met the challenge. That said, there wasn't enough oomph there for me to elevate the score higher. Looking at the vase on it's side did not reveal anything interesting as objects sometimes do when viewed from another angle. In my opinion, the background didn't add to the image, it took away from it. It took my eye from the vase. I did like the placement of the vase in the frame but found myself wishing it would go on forever into the background, rather than ending where it did (although how you could achieve THAT is beyond me!). So I guess the bottom line is that at the end of the day, it was still just an image of a vase on it's side, well lit, definately blue, but it wasn't offering me any new interpretation of the shape. Hope that makes sense, and remember, it's just one person's opinion!

Maybe if I'd had a chance to vote you'd have got to 5. I certainly think it's better than that score.

Votes by commenters are almost always substantially higher than the overall average unless you have a brown-ribbon contender. I missed this in voting, but it certainly would have been over 5.

Here you are trying to create an abstract image of lines, shadows, and textures out of a fairly common object in a position it's not normally found in.

One of the keys to a "successful" abstract seems to be divorcing the image from the identity of the mundane object from which it's created. Perhaps there's a bit of conflict created when you then name the object, and we're maybe left to think "Oh, that's wrong, a vase shouldn't be on its side."

Maybe giving it a title more suggestive than explicit would help draw people into a more fantastical viewpoint. The one strong outline reminded me of a cookie-cutter, and my first thought was Blue Shamrock?

I would have given it a 5 or a 6.
The cropping feels too tight to me at the bottom, top and left.
Lighting doesn't add interest for me and the background isn't particularly interesting either.
The negative space to the right doesn't really seem to add anything or provide balance compositionally.
It does strike me as a well taken image on a technical level (well exposed, sharp etc) but it's content is bland and the treatment of that content (composition, lighting etc) doesn't serve to lift it.

I hope this doesn't come across as rude, which you know is not my intention. I am intending only to provide one individual's opinion in a direct and clear way.

I gave it a 6, above my avg.

I also gave you a 5 - for pretty much the same reason as others have stated, very nice but nothing really to take it over the top. To make it a bit stronger I'd bet you could put one PERFECT yellow or red rose in it, with a small amount of water coming out the top, then title it "That darn cat!"

Another way, if it is possible, it to see if the shadows on the right could be really exaggerated. It would be especially great if the shadows had a stong blue cast.

Alos remember - only 4 voters commented - so it's relativly easy to change that average.

Voters either liked mine or offended by it. I had a lot of fun with it, so I don't care about the low score, a record for 1's and 2's for me.

Keep at it, I will.

I didn't think it was boring. THe play of light and repetition of the blue shapes worked for me. It earned my 7.

But you never know what us voters will do! Keep trying.
