Three of these shots I took today at or around the house my grandmother was born in. Its been uninhabited for nearly 60 years. I'm still trying to figure out this dodge and burn thing, I want to make this one of the house look like one of Heida's, guess I need to look for an online tutorial. The man is also my first real portrait, I find it hard to capture a 'moment' with people. This is a truck driver resting at a Truck Stop waiting to go off on another run. c&c welcome...

I took a few of an old abandoned house near where I grew up. What I did with it here.

I found it while a storm was blowing in. Good colors. Went inside and shot some. Went back a few months later and waited for the sun to set.
I think that the third of your pics would have more impact if it were a closer shot of the house.

Those are great shots dacrazyrn. The house seemed to be cleared out around where you took your photos, this house has been overtaken by weeds and trees therefore its much harder to shoot. I would really like to have some critique on the MAN photo, its my first candid-type portraiture.

Since I only got 1 comment in 24hours I assume everyone thinks these suck lol, so here are a few more for you guys to print and throw darts at ;o)

I really enjoy the one with old delapidated window. You captured the texture of the old pine siding very well and we can even see a tad of mildew in the greenish tone of the building. My only suggeston would have been to bend down / cut that bit of greenery that is showing in front of the window. There isn't enough of it to properly ground the bottom of the photo and I think having it absent would "clean up" the photo a bit.

I too have always been fascinated by old houses and I should really take a road trip with the goal of photographing some.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Beagle Boy..

Another thing to add to this post. I had these printed and a few of them turned out Way darker than they look on my pc. I have a laptop, how hard is it going to be to calibrate based on the fact that if I move my lid back 2 centimeters it changes brightness, know what i mean? :)

Aerogurl - I had the same problem with my Sony VAIO. The prints would often come out significantly darker than they appeared on my screen. The darker images tended to be the most misleading. "Dark" would print out "End-of-Mystic-River-Dark", meaning darker than my eyes and mind could handle (damn, that was a dark movie).

I'd like to know as well if other people have had this problem. Even a standard monitor is relative in lighting, right? You can adjust contrast, lightness, and all of that... Do you just have to experiment and figure out a decent setting on your own personal monitor? And - if you take the same image to several different digital photo processors, will you get multiple variations back in print? I would imagine so, if you're not using a high-end digital photo print service.

It's a great question.

My favorite from your rural life photos is 4752, the second one is 4653-2, but I would crop it differently - more cows less sky.
I love rural life. I used to work as a large animal veterinarian for two years in central Alberta. I miss farm calls, so sometimes I just jump into my car and drive around out of town. Here you have my recent findings.

My highest scored photograph on DPC is rural 'architecture'.
