After trying the sublime and the ridiculous for Vanishing point I reckon I have a decent image (in the middle with obvious challenge constraints abided by). Unfortunately some of the fine lines are a bit 'jaggy' I have tried and tried to sort them out with USM etc - any quick tips? Don't worry about the competition - honest :)

More jaggy than this?
I tried all sorts of things myself. Printed though, its just fine. I'm thinking it may just be the angle and the limitations of my monitor. |

lol, yes Ryan more jaggy than that - your just showing off :) excellent shot. Without giving too much away there are some dark fine lines on a light background and they are a bit jiggy jaggy. Also I have probably done more editing on this shot that I would normally do in a members challenge, I may just get a dq request :)
If its ok, here is a shot I decided not to enter..

That is getting kinda "jaggy". Were they like that straight out of the camera? |

Nope out of the cam at 100% they are fine, i think its the reduction in size that causes the prob, have submitted the pic but would love to heare how to improve the jaggeness :)

I read somewhere that you should save the image as a jpg, then re open it, resize it, then save it again. That kinda helped my shot a little. |

Nope, tried that and no better :( guess I shall have to live with it but am looking for a 6+ with this shot.
Mambe, I do tend to be a perfectionist in life but as my portfolio shows I'm not quite up to speed with this fotog lark yet :)

Reducing 8MP pictures to the 640x640 limit here is always a problem with jaggies for me. I have found the USM only makes the jaggies clearer. I will generally resize the pic, slight USM and then play around with .4 or .5 of guassian blur to soften the jaggies...sometimes it works and sometimes there is no hope. |

I don't think the #pixels has as much to do with it as you'd think. At least not this problem anyways. I'm reducing from a 4256 x 2848 while the cannon is reducing from a 3072 x 2048 image,. yet the cannon photo is showing more "jaggys". |

try resizeing the picture in small increments.
The algorithim might have problems with fine lines when you resize from a very large resolution to a smaller one. |

Don't use Bicubic for shrinking. At least I found it looks horrific for drastic reductions. I use paint shop pro and it has "smart size" that works wonders for me. Not sure what the photoshop equivelent is, or what setting will work better.
You can also try reducing in a little bit at a time like someone else said.

I just resized the city photo from above using incraments in photoshop CS. It actually came out looking smoother. Still not perfect though. I droped the size by incraments of 100 pixels till I hit 1000 then incraments of 50. |

Thanks all, the submission is sitting there waiting for your votes, will have a go a staged reductions then its off to bed. Mind you, i've now found more areas I don't like, my score is reducing even before voting starts lol
btw, after each resize do you save then reopen the file for the next save? I'm thinking this would be detrimental and saving at the end is the way to do it?
