It's not exactly my habit to grouse (publicly) over challenge results, but, having watched a photo which I originally thought strong fizzle out at a 4.8, I need some clarification.
Or closure.
It's like a relationship, really. Just want to take my photo out to a crowded café and find out what went wrong, for future reference.
Here's the shot:
Was there honestly a qualm about the subject being blue? How many people have eyes like that?
Thanks in advance. |

Well, the eye doesn't stand out here, for one thing, it's in shadow and squinted. The lighting is also very bright and harsh, which probably caused you to lose points.
There is more green and flesh color in the photo than blue, and with the bright sky, it is easy to miss the squinted blue eye.
Many people probably voted this down for not being very relevant to the challenge. The blue seems incidental rather than the subject of the photo, maybe a selective desat with just the eye would work.
Overall it looks like this could be a great portrait, but it didn't work for the challenge. Work on the lighting, in full sun it's easy to get harsh highlights and glare.

I gave this photo a 7.The challenge requested or said something to the effect...your challenge is to compose an interesting photograph where the color blue is a major component of your entry. (Try to be more creative than a hue-shifted picture of the moon!)I vote as to what the challenge says. Therefore this photo was on topic and crisp.I liked it.

I agree with airatic. Also, I think it would have been better to try to single out the eye with a shallower DoF - or at least try to keep the foreground grass out of focus.

I actually liked the harsher lighting in this photo. It gives it that perfect "summery day" feel. |

I just loved that shot; everything about it. So I can't help you with your question!

I didn't vote on this one but I really like the photo. but I never would have guessed it was for the blue challenge if someone else wouldn't have commented on it. One thing I try to keep in mind when I'm shooting is that I see my subjects in a dynamic context and as such am able to explore at a much greater depth than will my viewer be able to, therefore I really might have to almost literally whack em on the head with the point I want to make. |

Thanks for your comments, guys, clears things up a bit. Subject might have been a bit too subtle, though I can't see that she's squinting.
The lighting, though possibly ill-conceived, was intentional. The original picture was actually considerably darker, but I pulled it up for the summery baking effect. |

I liked the photo, but had no idea that it was about the blue eyes. A bit too subtle for me. I think it was a good photo anyway.
