I am planning a study of textures this weekend. The goal is to get a feel for the lighting and exposure requirements to capture detailed textures, but also to explore the posibilities that can be realized within PS.

My primary subject is going to leaves. Why leaves? They are plentiful and I can fit several into a small pouch to carry home, they hare lots of interesting textures and each one is unique. I thought about flowers, but I don't have a yard of my own, and those that have flowers are rather protective of them. Leaves I can readily get.

I have planned several arrangements, from single leaves up close to bunches hanging on a limb. The objective is still the textures, so any composition should have the texture of the leaves, not the leaves themselves as the primary focus. Any further suggestions?

Any suggestions on what how to approach this? Lighting tips or exposure nuances to watch out for? Things I can become familiar with in PS that are of special interest when working with textures? Any other advice at all?

Any suggestions on alternate subjects (preferably relatively small, but not so small it would be aproaching macro level as I do not have the filter for my camera that allows focusing that closely. If I can hold a few in my hand at the same time, they would likely be the right size.

Thanks.
David

/edit: added a bit.

Sounds like it should be interesting, can't wait to see the results!

I don't have too many suggestions, but ya might try backlighting some of the leaves.
